This has been my go to place for a while now. It's tucked away in the back of a convenience store in an area that you would never go visit to score great beer (located on the border of no libs and the poplar section of Philly). Northern Liberties Beer is definitely an example of quality over quantity. They don't have everything, just everything you want. They keep one beer on tap for growler fills (recent highlights include carton regular coffee, carton 077XX, Sunday morning stout, and sunny side up stout).

The main beer guy is very knowledgeable. He will usually come around and make suggestions or fill you in on what's new, or just talk beer with you. Both brothers are extremely friendly.

They also frequently update their Facebook page when new beer comes in (which I appreciate immensely), with occasional reserves.

Prices! We pay in the city of Philadelphia for great beer. That being said. You will definitely pay less then you will at competing bottle shops. Growler fills are also significantly cheaper then even what you pay at whole foods out in the burbs.

Overall, great customer service, carefully curated beer selection, and good prices. Definitely a diamond in the rough.

How did this happen? It must have been (again) PhillyTapFinder, or perhaps BeerMenus… anyways, I would have never stopped on my own here, a dingy convenience store in a shitty block of Kensington, at the corner of Girard and Whatever and right next to a doughnut shop where druggie zombies loiter- a lovely environment indeed.

But man, the beer! It’s all in the back of the store and there is not a whole lot of it, but what they have is rather remarkable. Some of the stuff I saw include Mikkeller To Via From, Founders Imperial Stout, Weyerbacher Insanity, Dark Horse Plead the Fifth, Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch, Avery Five Monks, Founders Devil Dancer, Off Color… serious stuff. The bottle I bought was also cheaper than anything I’ve seen around in the city. There is a beer guy who will recommend brews if he is around. They get good stuff here for sure, they were shelving Deschutes The Abbys and Sierra BA Narwhal when I visited.

Don’t be put off by the meth freaks outside and come vist Northern Liberties Beer. These guys deserve your business.

This place rocks. Jae, the "head beer guy", his awesome official title, is super friendly and is getting new stuff in every week. He and his brother, Jason, man the beer section which is situated in the back of a convenience store. They are super helpful and very friendly- they are happy to talk beer with you all day. They know their stuff. While it is not a very big beer section, it packs a big punch with a great selection. They have a ton of craft beers, and I use that term far less loosely than many people. Russian river sours, Cascade sours, less common Bruery shelf beers, Lost Abbey, Deschutes, and so on. They post to facebook whenever they get in something rarer (consecration, temptation, KBS, etc), and sometimes they have reserves on facebook too.

I consider this place a well-kept secret because overall they have the best prices of any bottle shop in philly, they constantly get new things in, and they have the best staff of any place I've been. They have a kegerator with 1 beer on tap and do growler fills as well.

Bottom line- this is my favorite bottle shop in Philly.
