A - A nice transparent gold with a thick white head.

S - Most of the nose is earthy/vegetable aroma from the hops. There is also hints of yeast.

T - Similar to the smell, there is an earthy flavor from the hops that hits you at first. Behind this flavor is some caramel from the grains. The finish is really nice and crisp with a hint of bitterness, but not too much.

M - Farily light bodied with a medium carbonation, makes this really pleasant to drink.

O - I don't think the smell or taste are anything special, but the crisp mouthfeel and refreshing finish make this an enjoyable pale ale that is easy to drink.

I love this brew. I hear that Alpine Brewing is going to expand its production so maybe this will be easier to find in the future. It has a slightly cloudy copper appearance. The head is relatively small and subsides quickly and hugs the glass. But sakes alive the aroma it puts out grabs you. Nice combo of hoppy floral, citrus and maybe a bit of pine. Complex array of flavors with perfect bitterness mixed with right amount of maltiness. I live a half hour or so from the brewery and really need to make a trip there.

A very nice pale ale. This one poured a great looking burnt orange color and a nice head came along with it. The smell was quite hoppy at first but once it settled I could get a more spicy malty scent as well. The taste was nothing revolutionary as far as pale ales are concerned, but it was a beer that did the style about as good as it has been done. Great bready malts hit the tounge first followed by a nice orangy flavor, as you swallow the light pine hoppiness hits you and is set off very well by the perfectly smoothe carbonation. A super drinkable beer and one that I will be getting again.

22oz bomber poured into a pint glass.

A - Pours a perfectly clear golden amber with a short, white head that leaves very little lacing. Nicely carbonated.

S - Not very hop forward, mostly malt notes on the nose, wheat is what I mostly pick up.

M - Easy drinking medium bodied beer with good carbonation.

T - More of what hit the nose, malty with a small amount of hops.

O - A nicely done pale ale but missing the hops that I would make me appreciate more.

Pours clear gold with a bubbly white head. Grassy, hoppy aroma with lemon and some earth. Lighter tasting than expected, until I saw its an XPA. Crisp and metallic malt with a bit of hops; not too much, but enough to know they are there. Good enough.

thanks to LaChupacabra for a box full of Alpine beers!

22oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. no freshness info.

looks like the ideal pale ale. fairly clear golden body, a thick 2 fingers worth of white head. big bubbles mixed in with some creamy foam. great head retention and tons of sticky lace.

cereal like grains and a little butter noticable. also some biscuity breadiness. just enough leafy citric, somewhat herbal hops to balance.

subdued citric leafy hops balanced by a nice cereal graininess. some hop bitterness in the finish, but nothing IPA like.

a light feeling body, carbonation fits well for the style, crisp and somewhat refreshing.

a simple and clean pale ale. definatly different than most pale alpine offerings, but i see where they were going with this, something everyone can enjoy, very sessionable, and wont really wear your palate out.

Bottle (2011)

Port Bottle Shop
Carlsbad, CA

Transparent golden with a thick and persistent nearly white head, with lots of lacing left down the glass. Gorgeous pale ale.

Muted bready aromas--cracker and crystal malts, and a touch of caramel, though not overly aromatic and certainly the least hoppy Alpine beer I've smelled to date.

Clean, simple flavors: bread, a touch of caramel, some citrus hops, though overall very simple and classic. Better than average.

Highly drinkable. Medium bodied, ample carbonation. Nearly perfect.

A highly drinkable pale ale, though it disappoints, only because of Alpine's otherwise world-class lineup.

Pours out looking like a pale ale, mild to average color yellow, 3/5" head on the top, white in color, average retention, average, somewhat inconsistent lace on it.

The aroma is minimally hoppy, if you're looking for the hop bomb aromas that many of their ipa's have, you're going to be a little bit disappointed. It still smells nice, but its really a background smell that shares its place with a grainy aroma that is clean, not heavy.

Same with the taste, clean, not heavy, mildly hoppy, probably appropriate for style, but about the most minimalistic pale ale for Alpine. Comes out a little more English style-esque with the breadiness of the malts, almost a Sorachi ace like lemonness. You start to pick up on a little too much toffee and caramel to a lesser extent, making the minor hop vibe fade away a little too early.

Its a little expensive to pay around $6 for a bomber of this.

On tap at the brewpub in Alpine.

Appearance: Clear amber with a small and short-lived head. No lacing.

Aroma: mild light malt with a hint of honey.

Flavor: sweet up front and only mild bitterness later on. A hint of honey. The flavor builds over time peaking in the finish. Very malty for APA style.

Feel: Light-medium body with near medium carbonation.

O: a mild but tasty and enjoyable APA.

This beer pours a golden yellow color with a very thick, fluffy off white head with a yellow tint to it. The head fades slowly, leaving many thick laces.

This beer has a mild grassy hop aroma. It has a slight citrus aroma also. It has a very slight caramel malt aroma also.

This beer tastes much like it smells. The only difference is that it is a little more hoppy. It has a nice grassy hop flavor. All the flavors are quite mild. It has a slight malty sweet flavor as well. It is very well balanced.

This beer is well carbonated. It is smooth, and crisp. It leaves a slight grassy hop aftertaste.

I think this beer would make an excelent session beer. It has a great flavor, and it tastes quite mild. Also, the alcohol is low enough to enjoy a few.

Overall: I like this beer. It is a shame I have taken so long to try it. I know I will have many more in the future.

Had on-tap at Blue Palms in Hollywood, CA.

Pours a clear bronze color with a one-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of pale malts with a slight bready quality and light citrus hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Bready pale malt flavors up front are joined midway through the sip by light grapefruit flavors. The ending has a solid bitterness.

Mouthfeel is good. It's a bit on the thin side with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this is a good APA but nothing to write home about.

Alpine Ale

Thanks to Rallison for this 1.

A- Light clear orange with a foamy head. Good retention and lacing.
S- Earthy/ grassy hops with a light citrus twang.
T- Yeasty hay/ straw with an earthy hop flavor. Touch of grass, lemon, and honey in the end.
M- Very crisp with a mild dry bitter body and finish.

Overall- A little lighter than I was expecting but enjoyable and easily drinkable. I, casually, downed a 22oz'er in under 10 minutes.

A good drinking beer, sessionable and moderately hoppy.
Looks-unfiltered dark yellow, with a lsting one-eighth of an inch of white head, very lacey.
Aroma-a little hoppy, a little funky.
Carbonation is right here. A tad toasty an citrus, but short of the citrus of Great Lakes Burning River, the benchmark for me for ehe style.
Thanks Steven Rich for bringing back from the Brewers' conference.
