Poured a golden clearer color with 1-2 fingers (when I got it) of white head. Pretty good lacing on the sides and nice retention on the top all the way down.

Smelled pale malts, butter, honey, lemon grass and some bread.

Tasted similar to the smell. Butter, honey, lemon and grassy. Some light pine notes, but as citrusy as I would have thought.

Light body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Slightly bitter finish.

A decent pale ale overall. Considering I was drinking most of it in the cold darkness in the back patio, these ratings could change if I tried it again.

Pours a clear light golden with a nearly pure white, quickly dissipating head. A nose comprised of notes of banana and green grape. Lagerish and pilsnery, if you will. Mouthfeel is certainly more full-bodied for a pilsner style lager. A little carbonation burn at the finish. this is a Candaian lager in full on collision with a Czech pilsner--on steroids. Not in my wheelhouse, but respectable.

Draft at the brewpub.

Pours a clear golden yellow color with a 1.5 finger white foam head. Good retention, slow fading into a lasting ring.  Soapy lacing costs the glass.

Light floral hop aroma with subtle citrus and sweet malt.  Kind of average with delicate hops and biscuity malt.

Medium bodied with a nice balance of fresh spicy hops and pale malts. Delicate floral hops with hints of biscuit, bread and graham cracker.  Nothing extraordinary but it's a good sessionable beer.

On-tap at the Alpine Beer Company Pub in Alpine, CA. A great place to drink great beer.

A - Hazy golden yellow, white head that fades slowly.

S - Fruity, flowery hops in the nose. As fresh as a beer can be.

T - Balance of hops and malt is great. Bready, malty, toasty.

M - Smooth with slight carbonation. Malt can get a bit cloying.

Big fan.

Had on-tap at the brewery. Review from notes.

Won't go into too much detail on this one, as like some other reviews from notes my notes are sparse, which means I didn't have much to say in the first place. I found this to pale (no pun intended) in comparison to hoppy birthday but still an enjoyable PA. Very much centered on wheat and cereals with hops adding a slight spice both in nose and in taste. It was a very mellow flavor blended together by some maltiness, but the body was refreshing and it was slightly creamy which gave it some interesting drinkability. I could enjoy a glass of this but not sure why I would if I had other options around (especially at the brewery!).

From my keg.

A - Pretty, light honey, very clear, small white head leaves fast. Lots of thin, dripping lace.

S - Nice honest grainy malt, hops very much in the picture.

T - Malt doesn't step up to the hops to me. Hops are there and malt seems to be an after thought.

M - Carb is fine, on tap - Pretty clean finish. Wish a little more sweet malt to the bitter.

D - Very easy to drink.

Poured a hazy orange with a nice head. Aroma was of citrus hops and a bit of pale malt. The taste was quite similar, with citrus hops as well as generic citrus flavor. Moderate mouthfeel with good carbonation. All around, a very drinkable and very, very well-made pale ale. When it comes to Alpine and hops, I'd expect nothing less.

Had on-tap at Blue Palms in Hollywood, CA.

Pours a clear bronze color with a one-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of pale malts with a slight bready quality and light citrus hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Bready pale malt flavors up front are joined midway through the sip by light grapefruit flavors. The ending has a solid bitterness.

Mouthfeel is good. It's a bit on the thin side with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this is a good APA but nothing to write home about.

Pours clear gold with a bubbly white head. Grassy, hoppy aroma with lemon and some earth. Lighter tasting than expected, until I saw its an XPA. Crisp and metallic malt with a bit of hops; not too much, but enough to know they are there. Good enough.

A- Pours a light amber color with an off-white head that possesses good retention and lacing qualities.

S- The aroma is citrusy hops with some bready malt, pretty balanced.

T- The taste like the aroma is very smooth and balanced with some biscuity malt and citrusy hops.

M- Light bodied with a good mouthfeel.

D- Very drinkable, I wouldn't mind drinking a few more of these.

Overall, this is a very good West-coast APA that is highly recommended.

On tap at Pizza Port, Solana Beach.

Pours a nice amber-copper color with rather visible carbonation. Very little detectable in the aroma. Light-bodied and tingly from the carbonation. Nicely balanced with hops and malts in the flavor. Will have again; found it quite refreshing and drinkable.

This was on tap at Liars' Club, served in a pint glass. Looked very nice with a golden light orange color. The smell and the taste were just way too lacking for me. I couldn't detect an oz. of hops in the aroma and neither in the taste. It was very grainy and definitely very light. There was nothing about this beer that would want to make me order it again, although it does deliver as a light, low taste alternative to something like a standard light lager or something.

On draft at O'Brien's
A- Clear light orange hue, minimal white ring of bubbles, moderate lacing
S- Clean, crisp scent, light bread malts, light floral/citrus/earthy hops
T- Very refreshing taste characterized by bread/biscuit malts, subtle hops come in slowly and finishes dry
M- Light-bodied, watery texture, moderate carbonation
D- Solid and well-balanced pale ale, very refreshing, no noticeable alcohol presence, strong session beer that I could drink all night long

On tap

Medium amber, sparkling carbonation, white head

Smelled very citrusy, floral, big hop aromas, I was expecting something more subdued, but wow

Taste, again big hop taste, followed by a sweet malt, then a little bitter

Had sort of a medium body, goes down easy, left me wanting more, a very good beer.

I had this beer at Pizza Port in Solana Beach on 10/2/04. The beer was served with a thin head atop the yellow orange fluid. The nose on the beer was all hops but the taste was a bit more balanced. It is rich with hops, no doubt, but the malt comes through and mellows the flavor a bit, which is a good thing. The malt has a bready flavor and texture to it that lightly coats the palate.

Sampled ontap at Pizza Port Solana Beach.

This beer is yellow orange with a foamy head that leaves a great lace. It has a restrained hop aroma. It has a solid hop flavor and bite, which gives way to a soft warming maltiness. The body is light to medium. This strikes me as a toned down version of their Pure or Exponential Hoppiness. Or rather, this must be the basis for their double IPAs.

Overall: a lighter bodied but great tasting pale ale with that Alpine taste.

Draught @ Alpine Brewery and O’Brien’s San Diego
The beer appears a golden amber color with the head small to moderate in size, the consistency creamy with the lace forming a nice curtain to conceal the glass. Nose has a brisk citrus like crispness with a pleasing light hop floral tone, start is sweet and pleasantly malt laden, top is middling in feel. Finis has a purposeful acidity, the hops upfront and spicy, the aftertaste dry and a fine drinking beer.

A very fine ale that I was fortunate to try at O'brien's in San Diego. This good looking amber-bodied ale was topped off by a smallish off-white head that laced very well down the glass. The nose is a most pleasing blend of the malt base along with the generous hopping. The flavor follows through with this nice balance and creates a genuinely fine drinking experience that eminently drinkable.

Overall just okay. I've tried some of the best California has to offer, so I'm a bit tough. No head, kinda flat and the taste is just right down the middle. Bought this cause I've heard such great things about some of their other beers. It could just be my taste, but overall this beer will be one and done for me.

22oz bottle received via Growling at the Moon. Thanks for the brew, Justin!

Poured into a imperial pint glass, formed a 1/2" off-white head over the clear amber brew. Head collapses slowly, with lasting lace. Aroma is balanced and understated.

Taste is sweet upfront, a peek of citrus in the middle, and balanced through the close. Mouthfeel is smooth, with easy drinkability. I, for one, will not slam Alpine for a brew that isn't over-the-top hoppy. Nice, approachable sessionable brew. Good stuff.

22oz bomber poured into a pint glass.

A - Pours a perfectly clear golden amber with a short, white head that leaves very little lacing. Nicely carbonated.

S - Not very hop forward, mostly malt notes on the nose, wheat is what I mostly pick up.

M - Easy drinking medium bodied beer with good carbonation.

T - More of what hit the nose, malty with a small amount of hops.

O - A nicely done pale ale but missing the hops that I would make me appreciate more.

No date on bottle...

Large flowing white pillow head. Loosely packed soapy foam. Brew has nice orange clarity. Moderate lacing.

Bready and clearly crystal. A bit of a malt bomb missing much hop. Dry and bland.

Zero sharpness. watery, dry, earthy, missing hops flavors. Very mild grapefruit flavor, very hidden and laid back. Tons of caramel/crystal malt. Belgian sugars too. Sweetness is mild, bitterness is existent, but not pronounced. Carbonation overwhelms the flavors and appropriate dryness..

A disappointing brew from Alpine; nothing memorable. Worthy, but not worth seeking.

A-Clear well carbonated amber, one finger head that leaves some lacing.

S-Rather malty, caramel, straw, what, not much in the way of hops.

T-Maltier for an APA than I'd like, but the balance is good, Starts caramel/straw and ends with a milt citrus and grass notes. Orange as well.

M-Medium bodied, nicely carbonated.

O-Maltier than I was expecting from Alpine, but the balance was good. Don't expect a hoppy APA but for one on the malt forward side, it pulled it off.

I know it's Alpine, but I was warned that it's not in the hoppy vain they are famous for. Yet still this is pretty good. The smell is crisp and lagerish, maybe a hint of citrusy grass. The taste light malt, not forward as i expected. Slight, clean, dry hop on the end. As a lite APA it's very approachable. My wife found it quite refreshing. Be nice on a hot day--sessionable!

Pours out looking like a pale ale, mild to average color yellow, 3/5" head on the top, white in color, average retention, average, somewhat inconsistent lace on it.

The aroma is minimally hoppy, if you're looking for the hop bomb aromas that many of their ipa's have, you're going to be a little bit disappointed. It still smells nice, but its really a background smell that shares its place with a grainy aroma that is clean, not heavy.

Same with the taste, clean, not heavy, mildly hoppy, probably appropriate for style, but about the most minimalistic pale ale for Alpine. Comes out a little more English style-esque with the breadiness of the malts, almost a Sorachi ace like lemonness. You start to pick up on a little too much toffee and caramel to a lesser extent, making the minor hop vibe fade away a little too early.

Its a little expensive to pay around $6 for a bomber of this.
