Mmmm mmm, Babyface is so damn cute and smooth, Raul just wants to pinch those Rosy red cheeks! Delicate hops like the day Adriana Lima was born (who is freshly divorced - can Raul get a hells to the yeah?) with enough complexity to make you think twice like the last time you ate Jack n the Box.

Yep!

The last year or so has seen a veritable outpouring of tasty session ales coming out of SoCal. This is perhaps the best of the bunch, perfectly crafted for those who want to stay active and enjoy the perfect weather this time of year.

The bouquet is zesty, citrusy hop-essence tightly aligned with honeyed biscuits. The flavors have a more tropical bend, typical of an Alpine offering, as the beverage seems to bounce of the palate and glide down your throat. Short finish and refreshing as they come. It's crisp, clear appearance only adds to its inviting quaffability.

On tap at the pub – multiple pints
04/23/14

A: Faint straw gold with some really well conditioned clarity giving evidence to all the tiny streaming bubbles within. Thick finger patch of ivory foam comes to a rest on top. Ample stay power here with some lightly etched lace that leaves a few dots and swaths left in its wake.

S: Smells of sugary gooseberry with some catty melon, grapefruit spice, and lots of tropical fruit. Mango most notably. Not particularly stand out with the white wine grape but no bother. The fruity tropical bouquet on this one is awesome! Touch of light bready malt character reveals as well.

T: Tropical fruits intertwine with grapefruit flesh, melon, sauvignon grape, and spice. Definitely has a lot of mango and spicy guava influence. More so than its big brother Nelson I would say. There is a firm malty bread like presence to it that has this drinking as a standard IPA would. Totally satisfying and refreshing with a nice hop bitterness on the palate. Lends to a super dry finish with another influx of tropic spice. Doesn’t strike me as a baby Nelson rather than a new beer all its own. One which is damn tasty!

M: Very light and frothy on the palate as to be expected. Dash of filling malts to carry it through completion. Upper to moderate hop bitterness. Super dry and crisp at the finish with a very clean egress.

D: Alpine can do no wrong when it comes to the hops. Probably the best Sessions IPA I have experienced yet with loads of tropical hop flavors and enough malty presence to bring this together. Just a super crusher right here. Hope to see this one become a regular.

You know it’s nice to be able to knock a few back here at the pub and not have to worry about the drive back home.

Robust flowery hop punch on the nose and palate. Hint of pepper. Acidic tinge when it first hits the tongue and it resonates in the aftertaste along with a lasting bitter finish. Light bodied, with a great balance of creaminess to allow second and third helpings.

An overall profile that's found more often in much "bigger" IPA options but at a very sessionable 4.7%.

I've had enough Hoppy Birthday and Zombie Dust (my two favorite sessionable IPA/APAs) to weigh them against Babyface, and I can confidently say that, at least with this first batch, I'd take Babyface in a heartbeat over both of them. The best beer I've had so far in 2014, hands down.
