Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
A West Coast IPA that features Amarillo and Simcoe hops "in harmony," giving a light, floral aroma. Duet is nicely bitter with the perfect amount of malt concealed behind the hoppy goodness. Immensely drinkable, amazingly light on its feet.

A - Pours a clear golden orange color with a thick finger of white head.
S - Aroma is a little citrus, a little piney.
T - Different. Muted grapefruit on the front end, very light on malt in the middle, resiny and a little bitter on the finish. Not nearly as bitter as I expected.
M - I will call this light bodied without sacrificing flavor.
O - Very happy with this one. Very balanced, easy drinking. My first beer from Alpine and I like it.

Exceptionally clear light bronze color with three fingers of lasting white head. Grapefruit, orange and pine on the nose. Bitter up front in the taste, and lighter on the backside, with grapefruit rind lingering in the aftertaste. Not much malt to speak of. Light bodied. Not bad, but unlike some of their others, I don't find Duet worth the high price point.

This is the Green Flash bottled and brewed version, best by June 2016
Look: The beer pours an amber color with white/off white head, not too many carbonation bubbles popping up. The beer is pretty translucent.

Smell: I got some earthiness, and some citrus, maybe orange, maybe passion fruit?

Taste: The citrus portion of the beer hits first and gets a bit more resinous in the middle and end of the beer.

Feel: The beer is fairly dry, and has a fair amount of bitterness. Very nice.

Overall: I like this offering more than the Hoppy Birthday. If you see a bottle i'd suggest giving it a shot.

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic pint

Pours a deep medium gold. Slightly hazy with two fingers of fluffy white head and plenty of sticky lacing. Smell is a robust bouquet of tropical fruits, citrus and pine.

Taste is dominated by pine resin, as the fruit takes a backseat. Very bitter throughout with a clean dry finish. Not quite as complex as the nose implied, but excellent nonetheless. On the light side of medium-bodied with crisp lively carbonation.

Top notch IPA, especially when craving something on the more bitter side.

A: Hazy, golden orange in color with a thin head that dissipated fairly rapidly.
S: Pine, very tropical, grapefruit and pineapple.
T: Similar to nose, slight grapefruit like bitterness, tropical notes galore.
M: Medium carbonation, slight dry/bitter finish.
O: Another really good IPA. Reminded me of Firestone Walker's "Union Jack".

This is yet another great offering from these guys. I wish these beers would be cheaper. Can't beat the beer tho. Great bitterness and hop joy with citrus and floral tastes being most prominent. Has that alpine smoothness.

Pours a nice golden/orange with frothy off white head. Aroma of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, pine, melon, mango, floral & herbal. Flavor matches the aroma with a slightly sweet malty backbone which includes bisquit and cracker. Not extremely bitter for a west coast IPA, somewhat juicy, and the Amarillo hops definitely stand out. I hate to call an IPA "balanced", because the style is just the opposite of balance, but FOR and IPA, this is vary well balanced. Mouthfeel is on the light side of medium, slightly sweet, but finishes somewhat dry. That may also be contradictory. Overall a very drinkable IPA. I would drink this again for sure.

Served in a snifter at the Union Brewhouse in Weymouth.

Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is an orange color with great clarity and vision of tiny bubbles coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Lemon, citrus, pine, toasted, biscuity, cracker, and caramel malts.

Taste: Pretty nice hop flavor with nice malt bill, light chewy, and light bitterness. Pretty crushable and enjoyable.

Mouthfeel: Super smooth, lightly lightly bitterness, medium carbonation, light to medium bodied, slightly chewy, and crushable.

Overall: Pretty solid IPA. So good that I grabbed a few more.

Had on tap at Lake and Irving. L: Pours copper gold with a light haze under a 1” clingy cream colored foam cap that persists through the entire drink.

S: Herbal aromas laced with citrus, pine and a hint of mint. Light malt in the background.

T: A good balance of herbal citrus pine resin and melon on a moderate malt backbone.

F: Medium body and carbonation.

O: This is new in town and very welcome. My son-in-law and I finished off the keg.

Duet is a crystal-clear deep gold beer with a large (albeit brief-lived) slightly pebbly ivory head that leaves good bands and caverns of lacing. The aroma is medium-big: a very nice blend of grapefruit, sweet/spicy florals and more subdued citrus and pine notes, with a hint of alcohol riding atop everything. Up front, the palate is bitter pineapple with hints of citrus; by mid-palate, the citrus notes have attained a greater presence and a slight IPA soapiness has emerged. Bitterness builds to a style-moderate level; a significant bready malt character provides some balance. The finish is dry and clean, showing just a flash of cedar, followed by the onset of a moderate grassy bitterness that lingers for a few minutes. Mouthfeel is biggish for the light-medium body, and the texture is slightly creamy and nicely peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. This is a solid IPA. A - Clear gold body with a huge white head left thick tight rings.
S - Citrus, mango, and pine. A great hop combo.
T - Follows the nose. A little more pronounced on the pine resin. Balanced nicely by the light malt.
M - Medium-light body, medium carb. Dries the palate.
O - An excellent brew. Very happy that Alpine is now in MA. A little pricey, but well worth it. Seek this one out.

Had this over the summer on tap along with Nelson, but didn't review. This time from a bottle.

A: Pours a golden amber color with a foamy white head that leaves some generous lacing.

S: Aromas of orange peel, grapefruit, pine sap and sweet malt on the nose.

T: Orange leads the flavor parade followed by the sweetness from the malt and some piney notes on the end. Long lasting pleasant, mildly bitter finish.

M: Full and smooth

O: A great pairing of two of my favorite hops. Not quite as good as it was on tap, but still very impressive. I will buy more of this if I can find it and share with others. A must try for hopheads. "

This is a solid offering from Alpine Brewing out of California. Very drinkable!! Beautiful color and head/lacing as well as aroma but the taste doesn't deliver the same flavor that you get in the scent. Lots of pine and heavy citrus (mango & oranges). I had to try this beer because I've tasted their session Hoppy Birthday and it quickly became my favorites in the IPA category. This one falls in comparison to their others in my personal opinions, while this brew is just not as unique or exciting. This beer is a typical West Coast IPA, and don't get me wrong it's a very enjoyable beer but just doesn't sit at the same level as Hopoy Birthday and Nelson which are both much more one of a kind flavor.

A 22 ounce bomber poured into shaker pint glass.

Appearance - Bright golden color. Big, dense, white head made up of very fine bubbles. Visible carbonation. Mondo lacing. Handsome!

Smell - Big pine needle hop nose.

Taste - Grapefruit hop taste. A slightly acidic flavor. There is a touch of malt sweetness in the background but balanced it is not.

Mouth - Crisp. Fizzy.

Overall - A nice, west coast hop bomb. Similar to Stone's IPA or Bear Republic's Racer 5 IPA. Not unique but very tasty all the same!

Typical west coast IPA. Plenty of bitterness but not much flavor profile. Wish it tasted like it smells. Nice to see this in distribution out east but would rather drink some of the better local brews.

Appearance - Pours crystal clear and bright, golden orange in color with an off-white, half finger width head. Fair retention, leaving a mostly barren surface and a thin ring around the edge. Not much for lacing, save a spot or two around the glass.

Smell - Hoppy aroma consisting of orange, pineapple, grapefruit and mango.

Taste - Follows the nose. Citrusy flavors that hit on strong orange and grapefruit, with lesser notes of mild pineapple. Moderate mango comes in mid-taste, delivering a soothing, juicy hop character. Malts are hidden, lending a generic sweetness to help accentuate the hops while lending a touch of balance. The finish is juicy with a bit of bitter citrus pith lingering in the distance.

Mouthfeel - Near medium in body with moderate, lightly bitey carbonation. Slick, smooth delivery with a crisp, dry finish. Stupid drinkable.

Overall - This is a hell of an IPA. Utterly delicious, with a smooth, approachable drinkability. I'm glad Alpine has Green Flash to back them now. It's given me an avenue to try their beers, and their hoppy offerings are nothing shy of great thus far!

Smell is heavy citrus - orange, hint of tropical fruit (mango and pineapple), and dankness.

The taste is an exact match to the smell.

Great representation of a west coast IPA with just a bit more juiciness.

Poured into a snifter/tulip/wine hybrid glass from a 750 ml bottle (March 2016 drink by)

A - A semi-translucent gold copper, half finger white head and a bit of lacing

S - Dank, sweet malts, dry grains, crisp water, cracker yeast, huge pine, pineapple, peach, mango, fresh cut flowers, rich soil, slight booze, citrus, green earth and grapefruit.

T - Grapefruit, pine, pretty dank, very dry grains, sweet yet dry malts, rose, pineapple, cracker yeast, citrus rinds, huge hop with a nice malty backbone.

M - Full bodied, well balanced, nice complexity, medium acidity, medium minus carbonation and a huge hop to sweet malt finish

D/O - Refreshing, delightful, fantastic on the eyes, nose and mouth. Just a hugely hopped IPA with a perfect malt finish to balance her out. Duet indeed. No need to way, enjoy fresh, often and with savory foods and salty sweet deserts. Spring, Summer yet Fall and winter will do! Well done!

Final thoughts - The ABV at 7% is pretty nice, if you were to raise it the sweetness would overtake the hop and become more of an over the top instead of well hopped IPA. Around $7-8 per 750 ml makes it less of a daily drinker but a fantastic end of week wind down ale. Alpine, this one is a nugget of joy!

Green Flash bottle dated "Best By April 20, 2016".

Pours a clear, amber orange color with a 1-finger bubbly white head. The head is gone immediately and leaves minimal lacing.

Aroma is pleasant, however very light and subdued. I get some faint grapefruit and freshly mowed grass on the back end. Lightly floral.

The flavor, like the nose, is relatively light and doesn't really pop as much as expected. Some tropical citrus notes, with a lot of piney bitterness on the back end.

The mouth is medium bodied with light carbonation. Alcohol is very well hidden. Bitterness lingers for a long time after each sip.

Overall, a good yet slightly disappointing IPA. I have not had the non-Green Flash version, but this is definitely not what I expected given the hype. There is a very good flavor profile here, but it's just far too subdued to be noteworthy.

L: pours a light amber. An off-white head that lasts a while.
S: Smells of piney hops with a touch of citrus. Smell is not strong but it might be because of the shaker pint.
T: Taste follows the nose. A piney IPA with a nice grapefruit taste in the background. Bitter finish but not too much.
F: Medium bodied that could use a touch more carbonation in my opinion.

O: Good, above average IPA. Maybe if I had a really fresh one I would put in the great category.
