Bottle received from Thome50. Shared in line at the Kuhnhenn Winter Solstice.

A: Dark brown with a light, bubbly brown head. Minimal lacing.

S: Whiskey dominates with some smells of roasted malt underneath.

T: This one is fairly alcohol forward. Lots of whiskey upfront. Roasted chocolate and coffee flavors in the finish.

M: Light bodied for my liking on this style. Good amount of carbonation.

O: Overall not the best BA stout, but a solid offering. Glad I have a generous trading partner who sent this to me without having to trade a lot for it because of the low bottle count.

Bottle (2011)

Thanks for opening this with me, nanobrew!

(Aged for 6+ months)

Nearly black in color, though truly dark brown, with a small dark brown head that doesn't last for long and leaves small dots of stick down the glass.

Unfortunate and distinctly flawed aroma: lots of melted butter and margarine, along with a bit of roast, chocolate, and barrel.

The flavor too is off, with lots of melted butter/margarine flavor, and some barrel character.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

An unfortunate, buttery mess.

Going into this, I was a little scared, as the rumor the beer had been compromised (infected) was whirling about on BA. Anyways, popped the bottle over the sink, and alas, it was all good.

Poured out an impressive and hefty black color with significant, probably 1" head, dark beige in color, and very little bubbles that packed themselves densely around the rim of the pint glass.

Wow, the chocolate drizzle and bourbon taste so flippin' good. This is what imperial stouts, chocolate and bourbon is all about, clearly top tier. What was once a fearful opening has turned into a thoroughly enjoyable experience midway through the bottle. The chocolate remains rich, the bourbon is well integrated, not boozy, not a bourbon bomb, just in the right amount. The mouthfeel is outstanding, doesn't overly thin out the beer being in a barrel. You can find hints of coffee if you want to find them. Caramel too.

When you talk about The Bruery, FiftyFifty, KTG, BADL, BASC etc. . . you should also be talking about this beer. Alpine is not just about hops (although predominantly so). This is a world class bourbon barrel stout.

On tap at the brewpub in Alpine.

Appearance: used motor oil with a durable beige colored head that leaves decent lacing.

Aroma: Mainly BBA affects, including, of course, bourbon, with hints of oak.

Flavor: Rich, wood-toned bourbon nearly overpowers the dark roasted grains. Slightly sweet.

Feel: Full body with good but low carbonation.

O: Very well hidden ABV. Heartily recommended.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black body. Decent khaki head. A little leggy. Some lacing and good retention.

Smell - Vanilla is most prominent. Chocolate. Bourbon comes behind it all. Oak also strong.

Taste - Chocolate and vanilla again are strongest. Bourbon heat. Astringent oak. Sweet caramel begins to dominate the flavor as it warms. Shades of fruity flavors as well.

Mouthfeel - A bit of barrel heat. Medium body, not very thick for a stout.

Overall - It has all the components of a bourbon stout, but doesn't seem to come together.

Got it ice cold from the tap. Had to let it warm up a bit. The bourbon hit the nose right away. The first sip was too cold, but as it warmed up it had lots of character to it.

A-Nice mocha head. Dark coffee like. No light seeping in.

S-Bourbon, mocha, strong coffee, rich malt

T-Strong mocha, coffee, bourbon hits the palate and stays all the way down.

M-Full bodied with a silky finish. Taste stays with you for a while.

Going to drink a a bottle this Christmas and the other I'm sure it's gonna age nicely. Overall this is a great BA Stout you gotta' try.

On tap at the brewery...worth the wait line.

On-tap at the release in Alpine. Served in a taster glass.

A - Dark brown with a small brown head, a little lace, good retention. Didn't really take a long time to look at it as it was gone in a flash.

S - Dark roasty malt, brown sugar, chocolate, bourbon. Nice.

T - Nicely balanced sweetness from the chocolate and residual sugars with the slight bight of bourbon on the finish. There is a good chocolate backbone with supporting coffee, vanilla, and brown sugar flavors. Bourbon is not strong but well integrated.

M - Solid medium body, not too oily and not too thin. Very nice. Carbonation is lower moderate.

O - very tasty. Many of us waiting in line took turns sampling this in the pub and not one of us came back disappointed. I like it a bit better than the recent BA Token.

Bottle into tulip. Pours a finger of head, nice creamy chocolate, black body. Nose isn't very profound, coffee, chocolate and slight bourbon. A bit of vanilla. On the tongue, great amount of chocolate, minute bourbon, roasty dark malt. Coats the tongue well, nice lacing down the glass, overall good beer. Very fair job by alpine, but could have used a little more bourbon character.
