American Double / Imperial IPA |  8.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This brew uses several varieties and multiple hop additions to the kettle as well as a large "hop back" to give the bitterness and aroma a start. Plenty of dry hops finish it off and give a big hop bouquet.
Draft & 22oz bottles.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass.

Pours a golden amber, with a tidy, silky, off-white head about two fingers thick. Slight haze. Substantial lacing. Juicy and resilient head.

Smells amazing. Floral, citrus and pine hops and notes of bubble gum (?) sweetness. Smells just delicious.

Nice grainy malt character underpins this brew, with a variety of hop flavors coming out of it. Bitterness, a pungent earthy flavor, some funkiness like overcooked greens lurks in the background. Some herbal qualities. Fresh produce - seriously. Some sweet malt flavors come in, muted caramel, and a fleeting fruit like sweetness. Flavors clear and there is just citrus rind like hop bitterness in the aftertaste.

The carbonation seems to work through this brew in a very balanced way as the mouthfeel is quite soft and smooth.

An enjoyable and in some ways surprising beer. Drinkable and delicious.

Received as an extra in trade with BA Black_Rider. Enjoyed out of a brown 22 oz bomber with no dating that I can locate. Poured into a Speigelau IPA-specific glass.

Appearance - Aggressive pour coaxes out just a finger of bleached white foam consisting of tight bubbles with just a few medium sized suds from the pour. The color of the body is a deep tangerine orange with amber gold highlights. Retention is slight, with the head fading to a film after a minute or so, and leaving spotty, silky lace intermittently along the sides of the glass. No rings to speak of.

Smell - Bright and pungent hops impart strong notes of citrus with a heavy dose of grapefruit pith and a less aggressive complement of orange zest. Some notes of pine and herbal accents also serve to give the aroma a little bit of depth, but this is mostly a citrus bomb. Very hard to detect much, if any grain in the aroma of this imperial. Maybe just some faint bread.

Taste - The same grapefruit pith that fronted the aroma is also leading the charge for the taste. Bright, pungent bitterness is complemented by just some subtle generic citrus and even a hint of malty sweetness that is only present enough to prevent this from being like drinking straight hop oil. There is some subtle tropical characteristic here that I didn't pick up in the aroma, and again, the pine and herbal bitterness is just enough to give some interest to the taste.

Mouthfeel - Medium-to-light bodied, with moderate to low carbonation and a very dry finish that lingers on the tongue well after the liquid has gone.

Overall, a very tasty DIPA, with a heavy emphasis on grapefruit and a fair amount of bitterness. The IPA market is so saturated these days, and it seems that so many brewers are getting their IPA legs under them that it's hard to truly stand out. I think this one suffers just a bit from that phenomenon, but it is still a very good IPA all the same.

On tap at the brewpub in Alpine.

Appearance: Clear light amber; excellent clarity; a weak off-shite head that manages to leaves some sticky lacing on the glass.

Aroma: very, very mild and subtle for style. Just faint hops. Pleasant.

Flavor: Mild for style -- more IPA than DIPA -- still, stronger and hoppier than the aroma suggests. Moderate complexity. Only moderately bitter at its peak. Moderate complexity. The hop flavor lingers on in the aftertaste.

Feel: Light-medium body with near medium carbonation. Dry finish. Slightly astringent.

O: a distinctive (D)IPA. Recommended.
