American Double / Imperial IPA |  8.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This brew uses several varieties and multiple hop additions to the kettle as well as a large "hop back" to give the bitterness and aroma a start. Plenty of dry hops finish it off and give a big hop bouquet.
Draft & 22oz bottles.

Dark amber, translucent, shot with red highlights. Thick and incredibly bubbly. One finger white head, fades fairly fast, leaving thick lacing.

Strong pulpy ruby red grapefruit aroma, with lesser scents of lemon, caramel malt, and clover honey.

Bright and hoppy - sweet grapefruit and floral - strongly supported by a malt backbone. Caramel and grains, but the heavy malt presence supports, not overpowers. Extremely hoppy. Chewing reveals a slight rind flavor, as well as some pepper.

Medium-light feel, but with a thick oily hop residue. Avoids the syrupy feel some DIPAs have. Very full and lively in the mouth with larger sips. Medium carbonation sting, no foaming.

This is a very drinkable DIPA - more like a single IPA as far as drinkability and mouthfeel. It takes a large sip to get that fullness. More like a Stone DIPA than PtE or HT, but one of the better DIPAs I've tried lately.

Thanks to JayORear for the trade!

Double mega-fail for no bottling date.

A: Pours a clear amber with a large and effervescent white head. Head fades slowly with quite good retention. Thin splotchy lacing.

S: Nice complex hop aroma. Get some citrus, grapefruit and orange. There is tropical fruit too with some apricot and ...hmmm pineapple? Some cat urine in there. Maybe even some pine? Almost too much to pick out all the aromas. Kind of a sweet caramel backing it all up.

T: Big and varied hop flavors up front again. Decent tropical fruit and grapefruit. Maybe tangerine too. Some cat urine initially. Big, big pine and resin finishes it off and lingers through the finish and stands alone between sips. Mild caramel malt barely noticeable underneath it all.

M: Medium bodied and smooth. Long lingering dry aftertaste.

O: Another fantastic brew from Alpine. I just had Duet and Nelson, I would rate Duet #1, Nelson #2 and this one #3. They are all fantastic but I feel there are clear winners amongst them. This one probably has the most hop complexity but the pine and resin dominates the most I think. Aroma isn't as bright and strong as the other two either, despite being an overall stronger beer. For all I know this could have been an older bottle, but who knows because they don't date. Regardless, wonderful brew from a fantastic brewery.
