massive thanks to ehammond1. enjoyed from a darkness snifter.

a - poured a deep black with just shy of 2 fingers of mocha cream colored head. lacing was stringy and chunky and although the head was gone quick, it left a thin skin of head on the surface.

s - nice roasted malt. not too much in any direction. some vanilla creamy coffee notes. soft cocoa powder.

t - soft. roasted black malt. very portery. tasty. some hints of cocoa powder. porter char.

m - cool and crisp. a bit charry. in a blind taste test, i'd peg this as a porter. soft.

o - overall, a nice stout...are you sure this isn't a porter? super easy drinker.

Appearance - This is a very dark brown in color, bordering on black, with a decent brown-white head on a rough pour.

Smell - The burnt toast and coffee beans lead the way here followed by a huge oatmeal aroma. The brown sugar is at first hard to find but it's there.

Taste - The oatmeal really comes out at the taste but begs for a sweetening balance of some kind. The big burnt character that I got from the nose was only slightly evident at the taste.

Mouthfeel - This is in between medium and full-bodied and a little bitter but not like I thought it was going to be from the nose.

Drinkability - This is one of those beers that smelled great but missed the mark at the taste. It lacked the complexity that I look forward to in the style.

I too, hadn't seen this Alpine brew before and quickly decided to grab a bottle, not expecting to get the worlds greatest example of the style, but, still expecting a solid beer, which is what I got.

The appearance shows a nice, dark brown, almost black, with very little, quickly dissipating head, poured into a snifter.

Nose is light. Very little coffee, with roasted characteristics behind it.

Taste overall is good, but slightly underwhelming. Again, mild coffee; roasted and sweet malts, with good balancing hoppiness. The body is medium to thin with average carbonation. Could have used a little less in my opinion.

Overall a quality beer that doesn't overwhelm. This could be a stout I buy frequently, saving others to cherish at a more memorable time.

Served from a bottle, poured into a snifter.

On tap at SD Beer Festival and O'Briens. Pours black with very little head. Aroma is malt and strong coffee. Taste is coffee and chocolate milk, with a sharp finish. Mouthfeel is not as heavy an you would expect. Not light, but creamy. Overall, a very good beer that needs a bit of time in a barrel or a little more substance.

Nearly black color. Very thin brown head. Not much lacing. Looks a bit thin.

Bittersweet aroma with a hefty amount of roasted malt and some chocolate.

Mild bitterness, lots of roast, and some coffee. A simple, tasty flavor.

Thin mouthfeel. Could use a touch more carbonation and a bit more heft.

A roasty and somewhat sweet stout. Incredibly drinkable.

Black beer, tan head, ample, great retention. Aroma was kind of lacking, slight chocolate malt aroma, not much else.

Good smooth oatmeal stout. No surprises. Smooth. Chewy. Chocolate malt. Little to no chocolate or coffee added I would guess, maybe a slight % of coffee malt. Thick viscosity, not overly sweet. A little bit nutty downbottle. Couldn't appreciate the caramel if it was there.

I appreciate this is a fairly ($6) priced bottle of a sessionable oatmeal stout, but I just don't see the complexities in this beer that other reviews do. Coffee, vanilla, caramel, just don't taste it in this beer.

On tap at the brewpub in Alpine.

Appearance: Clear dark-red brown but opaque in the glass; the decent looking head soon reduces to a thin ring. Essentially no lacing.

Aroma: appealing mix of medium and dark malts with a hint of caramel.

Flavor: lightly sweet; ample dark roasted malts; a touch of coffe in the aftertaste and a hint of molasses earlier on..

Feel: Medium-light body with low but lively carbonation.

O: a fine stout.

This beer pours an inky black with a fluffy brown head. The ehad fades slowly, leaving a decent lacing.

This beer has a chocolate aroma to it. I can also detect some sweet caramel aromas. It is malty. It smells very slightly of coffee. Also, I can detect a roasted malt aroma.

This beer tastes wonderful. It has a malty flavor. I taste some mild chocolate. Also, I taste some sweet caramel. A very slight hop flavor is present. This is what a Stout should taste like.

This beer goes down very smooth, leaving a chocolate malt aftertaste. It is carbonated to perfection.

This beer would make an excelent session beer. It is not high in alcohol, and the flavor is not aggressive. This might be one of the best Stouts I have ever had. If Alpine bottled this, I would definately keep a stock of it in my beer fridge.

Thanks to Scott for this one!

A: Pours a nice black color with a one finger tan head that forms up nicely. Not much retention, reducing to small rather big bubbles on top. Spotty lacing around the glass.

S: Roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, a little bit of dark chocolate and some oats.

T: The oatmeal comes through on the flavor profile and finishes with some bitterness on the finish. There is a little bit of chocolate and caramel.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Slight bitter/roasty finish.

O: An easy drinking stout. While not overly complex, there is nothing wrong with it. A little more chocolate/caramel/vanilla would have been nice.

A-Nice bubbly pour, but very little lacing and almost no head.

S-Like iced oatmeal cookies, with a little coffee in there. More liek decaf though, from 7-11. Under the right circumstances, this is not a bad thing.

T-Tastes like it smells, with a nice spiced oatmeal flavor, and some chocolate/toffee notes.

M-Falls a bit short here, if only because the body is thin. Good carbonation though.

D-This is actually what I look for in stouts--a bit of coffee, a bit of chocolate, and sessionability. I think i could knock down a few of these around the fire and be satisfied. Good stuff.

A full brown with lots of head, dots of lace. A lactic sourness that tears through before settling on the roasty and coffee and chocolate malted finish.Mouthfeel is creamed but the body is still average at most. Its a brown beer with stouty characteristics.

A: poured a straight black with a tan almost brown 1 finger head. It looks absolutely gorgeous in my Stone IRS snifter. Almost no light gets through the body of this brew.

S: Lots of roasty notes. cocoa, dark chocolate, dark coffee, even some toffee with dark fruits vaguely in there. Maybe even a small hint of spiciness.

T: dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, black coffee, toffee notes and a hint of vanilla. Finished with a dark chocolate/coffee bitterness.. Nicely put together.

MF: thick, chewy but smooth with spot on carbonation. Finishes dry but I like my stouts to finish dry. Leaves the bittering finish for quite some time on the palate.

D: very easy drinking stout. I like stouts but don't love them, but this stout amazed me greatly..

I'm glad I stopped in at Alpine during my trip to SD. Very nice brew!
