Captain stout was slightly disappointing. It looked rich and beautiful, had a decent head, but lacked in flavor and mouthfeel what I typically enjoy in oatmeal stouts. Not super robust, lacking in mealiness (went down more like a porter), and I didn't detect much in the way of chocolate notes. Not bad, but not excellent.

Pours an opaque very dark brown with a quickly dissipating pale mocha head. Chocolate up front on the nose that yields to coffee. Mouthfeel is a little thin for the style. Little to no chocolate in the flavor, but smoke and coffee in spades. Finishes pretty abruptly.

22 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a Uinta brewing pilsner glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery; I've loved the Alpine beers I've had recently. 6.0%.

Served refrigerator cold and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a fucking gorgeous rich tan colour head of fantastic cream, great retention, and incredible thickness. Smooth and rolling. Really, this head is just amazing. It's like a shiny golden-tan colour. I'm blown away. Mocha cream touch is impeccable. Wow. Body colour is a solid nontransparent opaque black. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Practically perfect appearance. The only improvement would be a better body colour (jet black a la Speedway Stout) and a bubble show. Lacing is quite good.

Sm: Heavy cream and subdued almost nitrousy roasted barley, dark malts, chocolate malt, vanilla, and caramel. Smells more like a porter than a stout. Some light coffee. A moderate strength aroma. Reminds me vaguely of Guinness.

T: Dark malts, chocolate malt, and some subdued roasted barley character. I was really hoping for more roast. Caramel, light vanilla, very light mocha coffee, and a bit of chocolate. Quite simple for a stout. I expected more based on the appearance. Nicely balanced, but underwhelming. Lacks boldness or experimentation. Not horribly subtle. Really needs more complexity.

Mf: Smooth and wet - too much so for the style on both counts. Flat-out wrong. Needs to be far more dry and far more coarse. Slick like a porter. Did they use oats in this? Thickness is good. Good carbonation. Fairly light on the palate.

Dr: Best served cold. Something of a disappointment coming from Alpine, but only because I expected so much. I guess Alpine doesn't do darker styles as well as they do lighter ones. That said, it's a decent example of the style (except for the mouthfeel). Pretty drinkable, but I wouldn't get it again. Probably equally as good on tap or nitro. Hides its average ABV well, but that's not saying much. Stick to Alpine's IPAs and sour(s). Pass this one up.

C+

massive thanks to ehammond1. enjoyed from a darkness snifter.

a - poured a deep black with just shy of 2 fingers of mocha cream colored head. lacing was stringy and chunky and although the head was gone quick, it left a thin skin of head on the surface.

s - nice roasted malt. not too much in any direction. some vanilla creamy coffee notes. soft cocoa powder.

t - soft. roasted black malt. very portery. tasty. some hints of cocoa powder. porter char.

m - cool and crisp. a bit charry. in a blind taste test, i'd peg this as a porter. soft.

o - overall, a nice stout...are you sure this isn't a porter? super easy drinker.

Received in the Bridging the Gap BIF from RobL, thanks so much, my first Alpine beer!

A - nice dark black, no light coming through, small head that dissipates quickly, looks like a stout

S - a bit of chocolate with some dark coffee roastiness, a nice well round stout smell

T - very easy drinking, smooth, very light chocolate, some roasted coffee notes, with some bitter sweet notes at the end

O - A really easy drinker, lots of stout characteristics but nothing beyond pushing it to outstanding, a really good stout but it isn't anything breathtaking

Bottle's been in my fridge for a month, about time to crack this. Waaay too much carbonation from the pour; was surprisingly difficult to pour a nice mixture of head and body.

Decent aroma: oats & chocolate, mild roast. Taste underwhelms as the excessive carbonation removes much of the flavor. Definitely an oatmeal stout; not much chocolate here, and the roast isn't as deep as I'd like either.

Nice to try, wouldn't seek it out.

Poured into an Alpine pint glass. About as black as can be without much highlight to speak of. Head was a small one finger of tan or cocoa dusted color and creamy in appearance. Doesn't last long though and the lace is minimal at the get go.

Smell is of dark roasted malt smells, coffee, milk chocolate, charred wood. The smell is actually kind of thin.

Taste is a very smokey and charred. There are some super roasted coffee beans in there too. Fairly sweet and delicious. Reminded me a lot of Alaskan Smoked Porter.

Mouth is smooth and the carbonation is light to creamy. Body is medium and the finish is average and on the wet side.

Overall this was a pretty solid Stout. In my opinion not as above average as Alpine IPA's are to the rest of the world but pretty good.

Bottle purchased from Stearn's Liquor in Long Beach. Poured into Bruery tulip. Good carbonation yields a nice head and leaves a fluffy ring around the glass. Smells malty and sweet. Some notes of chocolate and coffee. Taste is pretty good. Seems standard for a regular stout. A little sweet. Mouthfeel is decent.

Overall it's a solid beer. Nothing exciting but nothing disappointing. I would drink it if I found it on tap, but I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out
