Appearance: dark brown in color, 3/4 inch head, opaque, moderate carbonation

Smell: dark rye bread

Taste: dark rye bread and caramel

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, medium-high carbonation, sweet

Overall: This tastes like a nice English brown ale with a rye twist. Has an original taste that I do not get often in beers. This is certainly tasty enough to get me interested in this brewery and want to try more of their beers. Would certainly pick up a six of this.

A- Poured from the can to a pint glass for the review with a dark red body, almost opaque besides the edges of the glass. Light tan, frothy cap rises to about a half finger and has decent retention. Bubbly ring leaves spotty lace mostly with a few small webs.

S- Malts shine here with rye and grains reminiscent of a Brown ale giving toasted, slight roast, caramel and toffee notes. Rounded out by hops that provide pine, earthy and floral character. Slight fruitiness.

T- As with the nose, the grains provide a large portion of the flavor but the hops increase just a bit here. The malts lend notes of toasted cracked grain, rye bread and spice, cereal, biscuit, caramel and brown sugar but feel a bit thinned out for some reason. The rest of the flavor consists of piney, citrus hops and yeast giving bread and light fruit hints. Slightly metallic and watered down feel as it warms.

MF- Lighter end of the body spectrum with a silky, slightly frothy texture but a bit thin for the flavors present. Carbonation is crisp and at a moderate to high level. Light roast and hop bitterness on the palate. Kind of has that beer-soda hybrid feel of some beers I have tried but not quite to the extreme.

Loses steam after some warming and time and feels thin eventually as the yeast character takes over from the malts and hops. Not bad by any means but a bit more body might do some good here. Decent malt feel saves the beer from being a miss.

On-tap 3/11/2014 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted rye malts, chocolate, some spice and some hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty rye malt character. Then some mildly sweet flavors of chocolate and spices come in. The hops presence is weak for the style but complementary and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Smooth and a little crisp but a bit watery, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, it’s a solid beer if you’re in the mood for something that’s just a bit different.

Uh oh... terrible reviews... but since all of them were "hads" I have no idea why they were so low. Is it infected? Burnt? Wrong beer altogether? Oxidized? What is it man?!

Pours out dark, which I was not expecting, I was expecting a pale ale color, but forms a light foamy head that hits 1/2 a finger before fading fairly quickly, maybe the head was afraid of the darkness too, no real lacing, very dark mahogany brown color with barely any light escaping its clutches, but it's not thick or black.

Nose brings dakr malts, black patent malt, some mocha, a bit of a molasses chew like possibly caramel syrup, a slight earthy root like aroma slightly root beer like, very faint earthy hops perhaps, and slightest hint of a spicy rye.

Taste is pretty much a porter, spot on with a porter, not sure if there is any rye in this at all... well maybe a faint touch of an earthy character with spicy profile that could be the rye, or it could be from the light hops. Black malts are present, a little bit of a creamy mocha as well, cocoa powder like, touch of caramel but not sweet at all, quite dry, and somewhat like a dry Irish stout in some ways. Hops are light but there, again that earthy slightly spicy hop that seems to either play off like a rye character or overpowers it. Later I get a bit more rye but barely. Finish is dry, very quick finish, little more powdered cocoa and mocha like, hint of rye and spicy hops, then nothing, gone like a distant memory from high school.

Mouth is med bod, a bit creamy and dry feeling, decent carb.

Overall not bad. I wasn't expecting a porter at all, but the label does say "dark ale" on the side, so if I read it I would have known what to expect. Rye is barely detectable, but the malts are nice otherwise, and hops add a decent touch. More of a spring or fall beer than middle of a hot muggy summer day, but drinkable, very sessionable, decent, dry finish but too quick on the finish. Really don't know why the three "hads" before this were so bad. Maybe an infected batch, or they had it at some festival and it was overpowered, or not what they expected and they bashed the beer for it.

Thanks to womencantsail for sharing this one at GRG1313's tasting.

Pours a clear brown a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, rye, and earth aromas. Taste is much the same with watery malt, rye, and roast flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer with some subdued and watery flavors.

A-Pours a dark, rusty color. Wasn't expecting this beer to be so dark. Solid head.

S-Yeah I get a bit of rye. Sweet with some spiciness. Some decent citrus hop character.

T-Flavor is agreeable. There are some darker malt flavors here. Caramel and some feisty citrus. Rye is not very bold.

M-Like the other beer I had from Banner. Its offensively carbonated. A bubble bomb in my mouth. Bad.

O/D-If Banner's game is to be light in booze and session able, why am I having such trouble with their egregious carbonation levels? What's the point of a session beer that is mildly torturous to drink?
