On draft at the brewery, pours a dark brown, cola like color with a full fizzy head that disappears quickly after settling down.

The nose is all over the place at first. I get lots of dark fruit, pepper, but then it gives way to this overpowering apple cider smell. Sweet molasses, caramel mixed with cooked apples. Not sure if the draft version is a different batch than the bottle version, but the smell lets on zero oak or any barrel presence.

The flavor is moderately sweet, pepper, cherries and apple cider. It works. This is very enjoyable, balanced, and would be a delicious Fall beer to crush on a cool afternoon. I think the barrel could have been more prominent but either way, I like it. I thought the $15 price tag was a bit high, but barrel aging aint cheap so happy to see another DC brewery venture into this world.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Speiglau BA glass.

Look is a dark cola colored with a thin white head.

Aroma is syrupy malt and red wine.

Taste is a little syrupy but nice malt and red wine notes come through.

Great effort from Atlas. This one goes down smooth and manages to maintain the strong malt profile without being overbearing. Carbonation and yeast character is on point.

Look: Pours a dark, red grape color. It's really a fine looking purplish-red hue. Small head as expected and some lacing.

Aroma: A ton of dark fruits and some caramel/toffee notes. Sweet candied malt backbone.

Taste: Precisely the same as the aroma. Packs a huge punch of sweet, dark fruits.

Feel: Relatively low carbonation and a sweet, malty finish. At only 8.2%, this Belgian style dark is able to leverage all the best aspects of the dark fruit without being too boozy.

I was able to snag the last available bottle of Atlas Town & Country at Atlas' anniversary celebration held at their brewing facility on Saturday, Sept. 6. It's awesome to get a chance to taste their first run at a barrel-aged brew. 750 mL bottle into my Beer Geek Nation tulip.

Appearance: dark chestnut brown with a reddish tint; thin off-white head; lots of carbonation

Smell: loads of dark fruit characteristic of a good Belgian strong dark ale (fig, black cherry, red grape, undoubtedly enhanced by the barrel), an oaky woodiness, vanilla; fruity but not very sweet smelling.

Taste: black cherry/vanilla sweetness on the foretaste, oak tannin notes and blackberry-like tartness on the aftertaste, rounds out smoothly with a characteristic Belgian dryness facilitated by vigorous carbonation. The barrel has done exceptional work on this beer. Very impressive for this brewery's maiden voyage in barrel-aging.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a robust carbonation that really transports the flavors well across the tongue and makes this beer exceptionally drinkable for a barrel-aged brew of greater than 8% ABV.

Overall: An exceptional beer that belongs up there with DC Brau's On the Wings of Armageddon for the top beer brewed in Washington, DC. Town & Country manages to get fine wood and dark fruit character out of the red wine barrel to compliment an already fruity and earthy base beer. The combination is sublime: a surprisingly quenching Belgian Strong Dark Ale blooming with vinous black cherry and blackberry, oak, and vanilla notes. If this is any indication, Atlas has some damn fine brewing in their future!
