this was being sold at an off license in blackrock, which i thought was peculiar on account of it being 9 years old, so i felt compelled to buy it, it’s age hasn’t diminished its quality too much i don’t think, very chocolatey and fruity, milk chocolate, dark fruits, prunes, dates, raisins and fig, a vinous quality to it, sherry, bourbon also, a little bit of woody flavour, nutty, medium bitterness, virtually no carbonation and full bodied, a pleasant sipper and a nice barleywine

Found this dusty bottle at a cellar sale and thought it would be a good one a try. Lighter brown pour, not clear but certainly more so than opaque, no head. Toasted caramel edging towards maple leads the nose with notes of date, barley, light hops and oak. Taste follows, only date is now joined by raisin and plum, caramel is less toasted and more just plain sweet, oak is rustic and earthy, barley and hops are strong even for the style, thus they cut the sweetness nicely with still decent booze despite the years of aging. Feel is thinner for style, but plenty chewy and warm with booze.

The head is fine and creamy, with a light khaki color. At one-half inch tall, it lasts throughout the session. The beer is dark, murky brown while spotty lace collects on a Hoppy Pretentious Beer Glass.
The aroma is sweet, similar to brandy, with strong notes of fig. Warmth draws out bourbon, along with plums, prunes and vanilla. A slight background of Bandaid may be due to extended aging.
A strong backbone of malt balances the booziness. Specific fruits include prunes, figs and raisins while light bourbon ties it together. There is a faint sourness and faint smoky peat. The finish is long, mild and draws out the peat.
A soft, smooth, silky texture compliments soft carbonation. Alcohol is as expected without the bite. Appropriately, metallic notes are discernible late in each sip.
This is a real beer and clearly not a gimmick. It is relaxed and filled with subtleties that match well with contemplation.

Served in a chalice from the bottle here at Cerveceria Esparte in Conil, Spain.
Appearance: Deep mahogany color which is super cloudy with medium bubbles to the body head rose roughly to half a finger's length dropped by to nada after two sips.
Smell: Sweet caramel scent mixed with hard bourbon.
Taste: Complex brew, it is smoother compared to other English barleywines but the flavor a have your palates a bit confused. Sweet caramel and whiskey with light barley and sweeter malts.
Mouth: Pairing this with sharp sheep's cheese is the only palate cleanser, and you still taste the beer.
Overall: Great brew but room for improvement. The alcohol feel might scare some but it's easily one of the better brews to have if you're looking for the finisher. Salud!

Pours a brown colour, with a small head that fades leaving a good lace. Aroma of red fruits, wood, caramel, wine, whiskey, citrus.
Medium to full body, creamy, good cabonations. Taste is smokey, wood, red fruits, milk chocolate, whiskey. Exceptional.

2014 bottling
A: Pours a very dark reddish-brown. Tiny head that disappears almost immediately. No lacing, no head retention.
S: Whoa. I assume this was barreled but in what? Very fruity, red wine, sherry or brandy maybe? Very sweet too, probably bourbon I'm guessing. Big sharp fruity nose. Lightest hint of some cardboard, maybe a touch of oxidation?
T: Huh. Not as sweet as the aroma betrays. Lots of interesting tastes. Strong raisins and grapes up front - bordering on sour, this has to be wine barrel aged. Silky caramel and vanilla with actual oak so I'm assuming bourbon too. Heavy bready malt with raisins from start to finish. Just a whiff of alcohol on the back end. Quick finish a sort of gritty fruitiness.
M: Heavy with low carbonation. Smooth.
O: Interesting barleywine. Sweet and fruity for sure - a sipper and a smooth one at that. The barrel character balances out the big sweetness with tart-ish fruits and oaky character. Very little harshness.

I think this bottle is over chilled. Poured with a small tan head. Aroma is bread dough, licorice, toast, malt. Flavor is like nose plus just right carbonic tang and bittersweet. Good body. No sign of alcohol. Nice finish. Wish I would've let it warm.

Excellent barrel aged barleywine where you can taste the various barrels used for aging, getting both wine and whisky flavors. However, the price is out of control and it's definitely not worth it. There are far too many barleywines of similar caliber that cost 80% less.
