Having this on-tap at the brewery. Served to me in a 10 oz snifter, this beer draws a dark brown color with a thick tan ring of foam lining the inside of the glass. The color is certainly darker than most other is not all other barley wines I have had. Barely any lacing to speak of here. Aromas of caramel malts, perhaps some brown sugar, and a whole lot of maple syrup. The taste is pretty much the same, with very sweet, caramel malts, hints of brown sugars and a good dose of maple syrup. Well, they've certainly got the sweetness down with this one, but unfortunately that seems to be all they have down with this beer taste/flavor wise, as there is practically not even a hint of hop bitterness at all to balance this out. This needs to be aged for awhile so the sharp, syrupy sweetness has some time to chill out a bit, and this also needs more hops added from the get go. Has a somewhat crisp, but mainly smooth and slightly prickly, medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. I really wanted to like this beer more, but this is just not a very good barley wine.
