330mL btl from the expansion 6pk w/glasses. served at 3C(for head management), tasted at 5-6 C in a Westy glass.

Dark earthy, and murky nut brown pour; also a light gery tone that, along with some protein clumping (fuck) is worrisome. and a thick 3 finger head that shrinks to about 4cm and stabilizes. Very little lacing , i was expecting much more

Dark browned sweet cooked sugars dominate the nose. Subtle orchard fruits: pear, apple- maybe some cider spices. Toasted nuts and warm alcohol.

The mouth feel is smooth with a surprising lightness from the carbonation that gives a spicy tingle-bubbles at the end, dry on the front of the palate and juicy rear on the finish. Subtly present wood tannin without the overt acidity.

Very warming alcohol. Mulling spices: clove (including the numbness from the alcohol), cinnamon, mace, allspice, and white pepper. Roasted nuts in the middle, hazelnut sweetness, walnut creaminess. Caramel, licorice and hints of dried fruits. Lots of residual sugars especially on the finish. Juicy and oh so subtle.

As a taste experience, drop your pants and blow your load because this it fucking ineradicable. I have had a couple of beers that are about as complex but this was deceptively layered in a tight (not young but condensed) but not muddling fashion. Super complexity that takes only a slight effort to decode the majority and will give more as you look for it.
That being said I couldn't have this beer every day, or even more than special occasions, even if I could afford it. It is easy enough to drink and it hits all the right notes but the alcohol is about 1% too high for me and the finish is a little flat and is neither a complete taste (makes me want no more except to have it again) or left me wanting more .

Therefore I will give it two ratings and the above and a balance.

A: Soapy and variable pale tan head on the initial pour was 3 fingers and settled to to a thin skiff across the entire glass. A hazy tobacco brown in colour with flakes of sediment suspended throughout.

S: Sweet, juicy dark dried fruits, Italian plums, black cherry, musky black grape and black figs mixed with spices of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Entirely sweet with brown sugar and caramel malts, similar to a slow baked and deeply dark christmas fruit cake. The alcohol notes of brandy offer a base note to support the sweetness and fruitiness while a subtle yeastiness is barely detectable in the background.

T: Bold and assertive the flavours are sweet and spicy, while offering unpinnings of woody earthiness and rum alcohol. The sweet notes come forward first with brown sugar and pales malts steeped with the sweet spices of cloves, cinnamon, all spice and nutmeg. Mid palette the belgian yeasts shine through, although recognizable as yeasts - this is unlike other quads and offers a distinct & unique flavour profile that tastes especially of ripe bananas and warm bread. Mid palette also reveals a woody earthiness and worn leather - suggestive some something old world and calling back to a old tradition of crafting. On the back end of the palette the flavours are of rum and alcohol esters - warming and delightful.

M: Slick and smooth in the front with a warm and smooth alcohol chaser at the back.
Slightly higher carbonation than other quads with pin pricks up front. Like a tiny jolt to waken the palette.

O: Unlike any other quads, Westy is unabashed in its bold approach to the complexity and mix of sweet, spices, yeasts, earthiness and alcohol presence. It's complexity is worth the price point and effort to search it out. The drink is worth sharing with another BA who'll enjoy and appreciate the experience & appreciate the complexity compared to quads. Good to note - Westy pairs incredibly well with strong cheese, dried fruit and a good BA buddy, do yourself a favour and get one to enjoy and savour.

Poured into a stemless tulip glass 4/20/2014:

A: Beautiful quad color, dark caramel, with a red tinge to it. Perfect lacing, pours an off-white finger head.

S: Smells faintly like a glass of red wine. Has a very fruity aroma like prunes and raisins.

T: Tastes just like it smells. Strong dark fruit aromas. Tastes like a solid quad.

M: Very, very carbonated. Almost too carbonated. I feel like the carbonation robbed some of the more subtle flavors from me. Fairly sticky, but overall decent.

O: Flavors are all there, the smell and appearance make this beer worth the wait. Mouthfeel was a slight letdown for me. Try it if you haven’t, but don’t go and invest in a six pack because you might be slightly underwhelmed.

My buddy went to Belgium and worked for about a week to get the monks to answer the phone so he could buy a case. This was the last beer from that case. What a treat.

A - A deep tobacco brown. Lots of floating sediment. Big cream head leaving some lacing.

S - One of the best smelling beers I have ever had. It was very hard to discern aromas because there were so many. Unlike anything I had ever smelled before. Dark fruits, brown sugar, caramel were what I smelled the most.

T - Didn't taste much that much like the smell, but like something entirely wonderful that I wasn't expecting. A tinge of heat from the booze but so many married flavors in there make the beer go down way too fast. I almost need to drink 2 or 3 more to pick it all out. Prunes, plums, yeast, raisins, brown sugar were what I was able to pick out.

M - Good carbonation, which I expected. Wasn't expecting that much sediment, but it never bothered me a bit. Creamy but not too thick.

O - A bucket list beer. It's like art. I was truly fortunate to have the opportunity to try one. It's magic. Would pay an $ amount for another bottle that my wife would never agree to.

Juicy plums are prominent in the nose, along with malty, bready undertones. It's surprising how crisp and prominent the fruit notes are. The taste is actually a solid reflection of the smell. Lively carbonation tickles the mouth while the dark fruit flavors, with a touch of blackberry, intermingle over a gentle bready background. The nose is beautiful yet somewhat understated, while the taste is bold and lively. It combines for one of the best beers I've ever had.

Cap numbers are 15.03.17.
