One year old bottle poured into my Westvleteren glass (opened to celebrate the acquisition of the "Pierre d'abbaye" box!). Time for me to review this beer!
A: Dark brown in color with mahogany glints. Retains longly at 1 finger. Very appealing!
S: Very impressive for a dubbel. Lots of dark fruits in there : plums, grapes, figs. A bit phenolic also.
T: A bit of acidity on the palate. Then it is a nice blend of sweet malts, dark fruits. It is also bready and yeasty as expected from a Trappist ale. Light bitterness of the finish. The taste is very complex for a dubbel (I would rather have listed it as a Belgian Strong Dark Ale).
M: Good attack on the palate. A bit too watery. Nice carbonation.
O: A very good beer. Marked with its Trappist seal. Something between a blue Chimay and a Rochefort 10. Love it !

I initially tried this along with a Westvleteren 12 and a Rochefort 10.
Poured into a new belgium tulip to reveal a thick, foamy head. The aroma reveals some citrus notes. It is decent dubbel that is easy to drink, but doesn't exactly stand out.
I would struggle to identify this in a blind taste test against other belgian-style beers. I can't see any characteristics that explain what makes it unique. I have a feeling that I should not have tried it alongside the other two quads as they seemed to over power it a little.
Edit: Tried it again at Abbey St. Sixtus along with the 12 and the Blonde and this was my favorite of the three. Definitely better this time around. Loved it.
