Beer pours a dark reddish-brown with a little bit of white head. Smell is nutty with some raisins and sweet malt. Taste follows the smell, it's malty and raisin-y with a good, but not overwhelming, amount of sweetness. It also has some caramel to it as well as something a bit grassy that I can't quite put my finger on. Beer is very carbonated and very much on the dry side of things, which makes for very little finish. It's extremely drinkable, and there's no way I'd know this is an 8% ABV beer if it wasn't in the name. It goes down very smooth.
Overall this is a very enjoyable beer, but one that I don't think quite lives up to the hype. Westy 12 is a flat-out excellent beer, but I worry that the 8 is kinda riding the coat-tails of its big brother. It's a good beer, but not one that's worthy of being in the top 10 beers in the world, if you ask me.

A beautiful, deep brown with creamy, fluffy head. Aroma is intense, complex, huge. Brown sugar, dates, hints of warm spice, faint metallic note.
On the palate, it's just ever so much a disappointment. The body feels a little thin, and the metallic note comes to the fore. What's there is really excellent, a round, nutty sweetness with an herb-tinged bitterness.
One of the best aromas on a dubbel I've ever had, but not one I'd make a particular effort to seek out, and didn't love nearly as much as the quad or the pale.
