This 5% brew is no watered down IPA!! Bright hoppy aromas of pine shine through on the nose of this session IPA, while flavors of grapefruit rind linger on the palate.

Well this is a different kind of IPA...It's a session so it's got lower ABV but it's dry hopped, DOUBLE DRY HOPPED! For a San Diego hop head like myself this sounds like a beer I can really get into.
Poured from 22oz, not clear at all, so cloudy you can't see through it and I'm guessing that's the dry hops getting into the fermentation, it would be hard to remove a lot I can imagine...The smell is kind of strange, almost smells bad in a way if you are comparing it to a fruity IPA. It does have slight sweet/fruity scents but also something I'm not really digging and can't explain, it smells off. The taste goes along with that slightly off balance smell but that is what this beer is about, so keep reading.
It's dry hopped twice, so it's not a DIPA(double IPA) as one review mentions, its just a session IPA that has been dry hopped twice. That's a lot of hops, and considering they used super high alpha acid hops (Summit 17%, Nugget 10%) for dry hopping it's no wonder it bites your tongue with the first few sips. I was excited as well as hit in the face a bit. I knew it would be unusual having something so bitter but dang it was almost unwanted. I let my mouth settle and tasted it again just 5 minutes later and the harshness had simmered down a bit. Mouth feel is fine, nothing wrong there, you just get a mouth full of hops!
If your looking to see what a lot of high alpha acid hops do when dry hopping a beer then definitely pick this one up. Again these are high alpha acids which are mainly used for bittering a brew, but in this case they took those high AA hops and double dry hopped!!! I wish i knew exact amounts!
Overall not an easy to drink beer, but for experimental purposes or hop heads looking to blast bitterness onto their tongue this one may be for you. Doubt it will go over well for most people but I think it's good for what they were trying to accomplish.

Fresh from a bomber bottle poured with loose lacing, 5% is mild. Pungent hops, a couple of different sweet grassy ones in the nose and and very bitter ones on the finish. A session DIPA? What is that? This is a really nice smelling beer, exactly the most important part of what I like about my favorite IPA's, highly recommend tasting but it is not for everyone. Kinda thin, really, missing some alcohol bite or at least some more malt backbone. heck of a fine hop smell tho'. I do like it.

Pale golden amber pour. Completely clear and crisp. Nice solid finger of white head forms a crown and leaves alms for the commoners along the side of the glass.
Nose is immediately honey sweet with nectar, floral and mango notes. That honey/nectar note I've noticed to be something of a hallmark for these guys. I dig it.
Body can't quite hold up to the promise of the nose as the flowers and nectar turn into more of an incense bitter laid across some neutral malts like a water cracker. Less juicy and sweet and more... grassy/incense and... where the nose was more bright and inviting, this is more grey. Finish is pine and black tea bitter and fierce. Too bitter for a session, not dimensional enough for a full IPA, it feels like it's trapped between worlds. I love the ZZ Hops though, and glad to have tried it. Thanks Mica!

Attractive but not very foamy golden brew in the Ommegang chalice. Light, snappy, and sharp. Big slobbering bitter hop taste dominates the conversation. Slight malty note. A wee bit of something like mango. Pleasant flowery aroma.
To me this is the wrong way to make a "session" IPA. It's overpowering for the thin substance and modest malt. Or else it's just too damn bitter for what should be a refreshing and tangy hoppy brew.
From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Barons Market on West Point Loma. If you haven't shopped there, they have the most in-depth selection of most of the San Diego area breweries.
