Canned 11/20/19; drank 1/1/20 @ the Yarchives.

Black/brown appearance.

A violent pour yielded a HUGE tan head; thick, frothy lace.

Medium roast coffee bean, orange citrus & faint chocolate notes in the nose.

Creamy, thick mouthfeel.

Orange citrus, cream, medium roast coffee bean & dry wheat flavors.

Above average for the "black IPA" genre, but it's awkward in the way most of these beers are. An interesting beer to try...once.

a black ipa made with fresh hops from what i understand. its a deep and roasty intense experience, almost stout-like in its grain depth and body. shiny black with a little less head than some of the others here. it has a piney nose, intensely hoppy and bitter, more intense than i am used to from fresh hops, somewhat less oily and slick, more earthy and concentrated, dry though, and awesomely appealing. less smoke than some of their other beers too, more of a roasted profile for me, but at the deepest possible end of that pool, bitter from that, even ashy or burnt, but not smoked in the sense i am used to from these guys now. peppery vegetal hops in the flavor accentuate the bitterness of the dark malts, this is a mouthful, as its huge on both the grain and the hop side. char and pavement meet spruce and juniper notes in the hops, orange peel nuance, and a green plant matter vibe. its interesting and it grows on me the more i let it warm and sip on it. pretty robust as black ipa goes, and if it is fresh hops, its a different groove than they usually create, but the beer is balanced in its enormity of flavor and expertly made, as is all of the hammerheart stuff. maybe not my favorite in their portfolio, but they do some pretty epic stuff... a fine example of the style here by any measure!

L: A nice dark dark brown, near black, frothy mocha color head,
S: Dark roasted malts, nice earthy fruity smell, hints of chocolate, and perhaps an orange peel added
T: Roasted and sweet malts but taste falls off, very watery. Taste does not live up to the smell at all
F: Good feel to it, smooth and clean
O: I was looking forward to this beer after the smell but the taste was definitely lacking for me.

Appearance: Black, good sized brown head.

Smell: Roast coffee, hint of pine.

Taste: Starts with roasted malts then shifts to piney bitterness. Finishes with a mix of pine and black coffee bitterness that lasts.

Overall: I'm not a big black IPA fan but Black Cascade rests in the spot where it has enough roast/coffee/porter type flavor to offset and not fight with the hops. Another good one from Hammerheart.

Pours a very dark brown, almost black. Smells like cascade hops, floral and citrusy, clean, but not much else. Tastes medium-light bodied, a bit of pale malts upfront, hoppy/oily floral and citrus hops. A little bitter and toasty aftertaste. Dry, lasting aftertaste.

750 ml mini growler from the brewery. Poured into a Hammerheart tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours black as night with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of light brown head that slowly fades away.

Smell: A roasty and piney aroma with a scent of chocolate malt and piney hops. Roasted malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, smoke, biscuit, and caramel with some yeast. Earthy hop scent of pine resin and grass. Citrus hop hints of orange peel and lemon. Light hints of burnt sugar. A very nice aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and earthy taste with notes of chocolate and piney hops. Dark roasted malt with notes of bitter dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, toast, biscuit, and caramel along with yeast. Earthy hop notes of pine resin and grass along with some citrus notes of orange and lemon. A little burnt sugar as well. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Somewhat oily with a clean drying finish.

Overall: A very good take on a Black Ale. Good bitter roast and piney hop flavor.

Black Cascade - HammerHeart Brewing Company. Poured from a 740 ml growler into a snifter, this beer's head is two fingers thick and eggshell brown, with web-like lacing, and a pitch black body.

Smells like pinier hops ,along with very skillfuly roasted malts. I've got a feeling this will be delicious...

I taste a very nice blend of pine and citrus hops that gel very well with the malt complex. This is the best tasting black ale I've experienced thus far.

The mouthfeel here is medium-light with fair carbonation. Clean finish with no lingering hop oils or resins.

Overall, I'll give Black Cascade - HammerHeart Brewing Company a 4.75
