Appearance: Orange amber color with nice lacing.

Aroma: Smoky, barnyard aromas.

Taste & Mouthfeel: The aromas translate directly to the flavors, as the first things you pick up on are smoke, and for the first time in my tasting experiences, a true barnyard flavor. The barnyard description might sound off putting, but it’s less a pig pen flavor and more a flavor of earth and alfalfa hay. Smoky throughout, but finishes with the grainy flavor of wheat malt.

Final Word: Described as a smoky wheat beer, it is exactly that and nothing more. The smoke flavor is pleasant, and gets wrapped up in the barnyard flavors to present an image of a farm with a hay barn and smoke shack. Everything about this beer feels like a farm in the countryside, which is certainly charming in its own right, but if you don’t like smoky flavors you won’t find anything to like in this beer. The barnyard flavors could easily turn off a drinker that isn’t used to them, but again, they blend well with the smoke and aren’t overwhelming. The flavors in here are very nice, but it’s a straightforward experience that doesn’t really develop as you drink, so I found myself wishing that the beer was more complex or full. Try this beer if you are in love with the specific style; want to expand your palate, as it’s a good example of how barnyard flavors can be pleasantly used; or if there isn’t anything more exciting or rare available. Definitely worth at least one try, but don’t prioritize it over something else you’ve had your eye on.
