750 ml mini growler from the brewery. Poured into a Hammerheart tulip glass. 2016 version aged in Four Roses.

Appearance: Pours a hazy brownish amber red with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of off white head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A sweet and nicely boozy aroma with a scent of bourbon, smoke, peat, and caramel. Barrel scent of bourbon whiskey, oak, vanilla, and wood. Big malt scent of smoke and peat along with some hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, and grains with yeast. A very nice rich aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely boozy and sweet barrel forward taste with notes of bourbon, smoke, peat, and caramel. Big barrel presence with notes of bourbon whiskey, vanilla, oak, and wood. Good notes of smoke and peat along with malt notes of caramel, toffee, biscuit, and grains along with some yeast. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, and fairly slick. Alcohol heat is masked well.

Overall: A very good Barrel Aged version of an Irish Red. Great blend of bourbon barrel, smoke, and peat notes with the caramel malt base.

Red in color but transparent. The first thing that hit me with this was a smoky flavor which faded into a standard flavor of a red.

Smoky phenols dominate aroma, with accents of sweet caramel malt and herbal hops. Vanilla and oak surface late, complementing the caramel malt.

Flavor is also phenolic, but more plasticy. There's a pretty sweet, almost worty backbone, hints of fruity specialty malt character, and a dry, oaky, lightly bitter finish. Notes of vanilla surface as it warms.

The smoke is a tad overdone on this one. Overwhelms the barrel character. Yeah, and that worty character throughout, combined with the phenols, is reminiscent of diacetyl somehow. Not my combination of flavors.

i had a lot of barrel aged beers at this awesome brewery, but this one, i think by far, had the most barrel character to it. i dont know if its because the base beer was lighter than some of the others, if it spent more time on oak, or if maybe it was in a first use barrel or something, but the bourbon character in this thing is insane. you would think it sweet being a red, but its not, its flavor without sugar, genius beer. this one, more than others here, has a big head and plenty of carbonation, and is one of the few this low in abv. i think that helps it drink really light, and allows the barrel to be standing out so much. the malt is deeply flavorful, woodsy and bold without being huge or sugary, that still amazes me every time in a red beer. this one also has some yeast character to it, which most of the others didnt. bready and fresh baked. the honey and vanilla notes from the bourbon are high, and the oak barrel itself has left its mark. maybe i have to give it to the brown ahead of this one, but this is incredible beer as well. these guys deserve some more attention, extremely impressive operation from top to bottom.
