There's a line where drinkable beer meets imperial beer. And as far as amber or red ale is concerned, Serpensblod toes that line with precision and confidence.
Dark garnet in its pour, a creamy skirt of froth adorns the rim just ahead of bold malt aromas and a sharp boozy tingle. Laced with flavors of brown sugar, molasses and toffee, its deep aromas and rich taste is nutty, toasty and sweet.
With developing flavors of toasted oak, earthen peat and burnt sugars simmering on the palate, a faint hop balance rears up with citrus, pine and leaf. Somewhat peppery, other nuances of coffee, chocolate and aniseed peaks through the sweetness periodically.
Holding onto much of its residual sweetness even deep in finish, the ale closes with spicy alcohol, a mild numbing sensation and unmistakable whisky influence. Even with the vanillans, caramels and wood spices swirling around, its acetone bite doesn't fade quietly.

Darkest amber I've seen. It's black. Aroma is peaty, with a hint of smoke and chocolate adding complexity to a roast malt base. Whiskey is fairly subtle and balances well. Flavor reveals much more chocolate initially, finishing roasty, slightly charred, and bitter. Smoke lingers in the aftertaste, along with oak. The vanilla and caramel notes from the whiskey combine with chocolate malt to form malted milk ball sensations. Wish the finish were a bit less roasty bitter.

On tap at the Nachbar in Louisville.
A. Dark brown mahogany color. Not much of a head. Looks thin.
S. Not a lot of fragrance. Smoke, dark malts, tannins and oak.
T. Dark malts, a little barrel, smoke, and toffee.
M. Very thin, high carb, medium body
O. Not very representative of the barrel aged style. Way too thin with very muted flavors. Not recommended.
