Taster at Republic. Had to double check on the pour as it's the darkest pale I've seen. Also, its listed as slightly smoky...ummm, no. Medium to dark brown with small creamy head. Ok, really this should probably be a smoked beer. Ashy, peaty, roasty. Comparable to a Schlenkerla. Bamburg style. And great, by the way.

Subtlety is the watchword on this thoughtful and creative ale.
Had on tap at The Beer Temple. In a small snifter with one inch of foam and its dark body with reddish tinges, it Looked inviting for an APA.
Smells were like no APA I've ever had: a touch of smoke, some fruits (citrus and dark) and a concoction of herbs (which I took to be the juniper and some mild hops ... but none trying to steal the show.) Tastes were the same, not able to discern ingredients clearly; but having the enjoyment of them all working together. Refreshing.
OA: I particularly like how this is a creative take on the APA style; smoking those malts. Thinking I will like these guys, I went on their website... and I was correct. While their story has been written before about dedicated home brewers following their bliss, these guys seem to operate at a higher level with awareness of their craft and stretching the gamut to the detail of the artwork. So impressed with their innovation, I immediately went into the store and, shortly, will review two other Hammerheart offering.

Pours a cloudy, reddish-garnet colour. Smells bready, nutty, bitter hops, a little sweet, and smokey. Tastes like it smells, slight sweet bready/cereal malts, hint of juniper, with a dry-bready finish that continues. Very slight smoke in the aftertaste.

a smoked pale ale with juniper, and a really original and amazing beer, like so many are from these guys. from the tap its a deep caramel color, thick and dark for a pale, but that must be the smoked malt. the carbonation is high and the head is thick and holds well, just off white. wonderful aroma here, complex and somewhat less smoked than a lot of their others are, more subtle here, although that aspect is certainly still at the forefront of this. the hops are piney and sturdy in the aroma, and it translates well to the flavor. there is also that spicy botanial heavy juniper in here, which i think marries really nicely with the hops. both elements are just a tad more vibrant in the nose, especially the juniper, but it really is a wonderful fall bouquet of flavors. the smoke and the pine and the earthy nature of it all. it has a little more body than most american pales, which i reckon is quite necessary here with all the flavor and the long finish. smooth and a little sweet with the bitter in the end, smoke and pine round it out, subtle honey too. incredible depth of flavor, brilliant recipe. these guys are one of my favorites anywhere! nobody is making beer like this except for them...

750 ml mini growler from the brewery. Poured into a Hammerheart tulip glass.
Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head that settles into a thin creamy layer.
Smell: A toasty and grainy malt forward aroma with a scent of toast, caramel, and subtle fruit. Toasted malt with a scent of grains, caramel, biscuit, and a hint of rye like spice. Some earthy hop hints of grass. Slight citrus hints of orange and lemon. Hints of honey sweetness. Juniper is very subtle. A pretty nice aroma.
Taste: Like it smells, a toasty and grainy malt forward taste with notes of toast, caramel, and slight fruit. Toasted malt with notes of grains, biscuit, caramel, cracker, and rye spice along with yeast. Earthy hop notes of grass. Subtle citrus fruit notes of orange peel and lemon. Slight notes of juniper along with some honey sweetness. A very good taste.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp and very smooth.
Overall: A very solid Pale Ale. Nice toasty and spicy malt flavor.

Puffed wheat cereal and mild smoke, pretty boring. No trace of the juniper unfortunately.
Pale gold, cereal and smoke smell. Tastes the same... Cereal grain is just a dull base.
A bit watery and thin bodied, bland and not the most quenching or pleasant.
Nothing very exciting here, starting to notice a pattern from this brewery.

The early darling of the craft brewer has always been the American pale ale, but the style has fallen from grace in favor of hopper, crisper, and drier taste. But if the style is going to make a comeback, it's going to be on the heels of brewers like HammerHeart and their distinctive ale like Bergtatt.
The beer's burnt orange color sheds a light and arid cottony froth with light haze swirling underneath. Its nose is a medley of citrus, berry and peppery grain while its taste opens with a dry caramel and honey undertow.
Bright with effervescence, the ale blossoms across the middle as the carbonation lifts the early graham cracker, caramel and honey sweetness and begins to highlight the hops citrus character and the grain's rye-like bite. White grapefruit peel, orange peel, gooseberry and a light lemony twang gives the beer's balance a pleasant grassy and herbal flavor.
Crisp, clean and highly refreshing, the medium-bodied taste finishes hop-balanced with citrus, rye, and a hint of gin. It's a complex taste that's effortless on the palate, showing some exotic hop flavors and some rustic nuances as well. Caught between the pale ale and IPA styles, this beer is reshaping the craft beer scene as we speak.
