I went through a wonderful visit at De Prael brewery. Totally personal and customized without any previous arrangement. They have a social work and produce a nice selection of beers next to the red light district. After the visit we had a nice tasting from different taps. I recommend.

A reasonably good selection of local beer, location is great if you are in the tourist district. Pleasant atmosphere and surprisingly decent prices too!

I visited this place during a day-trip to Amsterdam (from Maastricht) on 30SEP14.
Wasn't hard to find on a small, narrow side street in the downtown area. Part of a big, white building, doors and windows trimmed in deep blue, with a few small tables parked out front. First area you enter has some small, high tables on the left and right, with an L-shaped bar on the far right. Go straight and stairs lead up or down. Down goes to the WC area, up goes to a larger, lounge-type set-up. First part on the left has some tables with comfy, padded seats and old 33rpm vinyl LPs adorning the walls. Back around and to the right rear is more laxing space. Through some rear windows you can see the brewing apparatus next door. A bit further and looking towards the front is another lounge area with some old, comfy recliners and rocking chairs. An odd arrangement, indeed, but quite off-beat and relaxing. A mix of current and pop music filled the air.
The servers I encountered, mainly at the bar, were all friendly and helpful. They had seven house-brews available - Kölsch style, smoked porter, tripel, IPA, Scotch Ale, bock, and a barrel-aged barleywine. I had the tripel, Scotch Ale and barleywine, enjoying them all. Looking forward to a return visit here in the future. Prosit!!

These guys are a pretty good brewery with a nice bar to enjoy them at, especially if you're looking for a place close to Centraal Station. I often hear people complain about the service, but the service is actually one of the greatest things about this place: de Prael makes a point to employ bar and kitchen staff that have been unemployed for the long-term for whatever reason (in many cases, this is due to things such as a mental illness, homelessness, or recovery from addiction). For that reason alone, this place is worth a visit to support a brewery that truly gives back to the community.

Great place to visit while in Amsterdam. I always fly in on Sunday morning and pay a visit to de Prael for Sunday afternoon jazz. It's a big, open space with lots of sunlight. The beers are somewhat hit or miss but it's always fun to try their rotating stuff and see what's new. Really enjoyed the double IPA and the RIS on this most recent visit. Service is always super friendly and it's hard to find better bitterballen in Amsterdam

Pretty central location, yet still somehow out of the way.
Really dig the teardrop logo...
Very large tasting room. Bar service was beyond disinterested. They featured a nice selection of beers and everything was served appropriately.
Atmosphere was bad on this night - awful american music and a bit of a cheesy vibe. One and done - too many other places

I suspect that De Prael is just one of many points which represents a change in the Dutch beer culture towards a more American style. The interior of its proeflokaal is large when you look deep enough, but upfront there are only a places to sit if you're looking to sample the goods and go. Next to the bar hangs a list of the beers available. There are 13 taps, however 2 of them had blown out. Still, 11 house beers is a strong collection, and those that remained included a variety of styles; quadruppel, kolsch, trippel, IPA, wheat, dortmunder, scotch ale, barleywine. The beer is served in 250-300 ml pours with three available pieces of glassware with a €3-3.50 tag for most. Small pours, but the IPA and tripel which I tried were good. A small food menu is available too, so I grabbed an order of meatballs (yum yum). It's location is great (not far from the Red Light District and Central Station), so consider giving De Prael a look.

Vibe: The tasting room is a very large and inviting space that has seating on two levels, at the bar area, and on the alley in front of the building. The bathroom was appropriately themed because you pulled a tap handle above the sink to get water.
Quality: Beers were served at the proper temperatures using a variety of glassware (e.g., stange, goblet, snifter).
Service: Our waitress was very friendly. My girlfriend ordered a flight and the waitress gave a detailed description and history behind each beer when they were brought over-all in perfect English.
Selection: 13 beers were available on-tap and flights of four beers could be bought for 10€.
Food: Light pub fare was served. I had a plate of bitterballen and they were very good.
