A: Beautiful golden color with lingering white head. Almost transparent

S: Very nice at first - tropical fruit and pine blast, but then the aroma becomes more subdued.

T: Follows the nose, but a bit muted. Also, there is some slight astringent harshness. A very nice malt flavor comes out as it warms.

M: Farily dry with lively carbonation

O: A good DIPA. I would drink this again if it were offered to me, but I don't think I would seek it out.

Dudes' is a local South Bay LA Brewery with distribution in SoCal. Double trunks is available in tallboy cans and on tap. Sample reviewed from tap.

Amber/Orange color, cloudy with a thick cream-colored head. The head persists with lacing on the glass.

Beer smells more malty than hoppy, which suprised me for the DIPA style. Taste is bitter though, resulting in a nicely balanced DIPA. Alcohol smell and taste are minimal despite >10% ABV. Notes of grapefruit and malt present.

Double Trunk is very good, but not in the same calss as Pliny the Elder

16 oz can to my FW Imperial Nonic glass
Notes taken from 12/01/13

A: Deep and dense amber body with a glowing orange tinge to it. This is one heady bitch billowing with the khaki stuff. Incredible amount of hang from the cloud of fluff on top that just cakes the glass with stick all the way down the drink.

S: Smells of grainy malt on the nose. Odd as I was expecting a burst of hops here. Perhaps some light pine and florals there but this is mostly grains in the aroma. Pretty flat and disappointing.

T: Grainy malt base remains firm in the flavor with some restrained grapefruit, orange rind, pine, and a touch of florals. There is a high amount of hop bitters but with a relatively low amount of actual hop flavor. The alcohol makes an appearance but is incredibly well masked for such a big beer and in that sense this is fairly well balanced. The additions of dextrin are likely here as this stays very dry and crisp with only some minor sweetness. This needs some work. The malt and alcohol balance are there but late addition hops are just lacking.

M: Fairly light to moderate filling with some high bitters and a drying finish. Warming alcohol noted. Slightly sticky but not particularly resinous.

D: Like a hopped up malt liquor. High octane with some balanced drinkability. Not a favorite. Could be great but definitely needs more dry hops.

Crystal clear orange hued body with a medium-large frothy bone hued head. Aromas are of floral and citrusy hops, light grapefruit pith, alcohol and malty sweet notes, light biscuit and caramel. Low ester. Flavors are medium balance, malty, low bitter, floral, citrusy. Well hidden alcohol. No fusel character, but immediately warming. Light windex/chemical flavor in the finish. Lingering citrus. Not overtly forward in its dry hop character. Medium carbonation, warming, medium bodied.

A - Opened the can and immediately could see head coming out and a blast of flavor. Poured into a pint glass, a deep orange, gold, with a 2 to 3 finger off white head. This is how a DIPA should look!

S - I can't say enough good things about the smell, very pineapple up front, then grapefruit, sweetness, piney, orange, ends with on a curious note to take a drink. Very appealing to the nose.

T - This is very complex to describe. Very balanced in terms of sweetness, bitterness, malty, pine. This is balanced so excellent. This is your traditional West Coast IPA on steroids.

M - A medium to high body, very smooth going down, a comforting feeling around the palate from carbonation, warming going down, I am assuming from the alcohol. Very balanced with the mouthfeel and very drinkable.

Overall - I've had the other so called quality DIPA's out there, Heady, Pliny, you name it and I must say, this definitely should be hanging up there with the big boys. Everything is so balanced, very drinkable, and I can't understand how this has the score it does on here? Perhaps a bad batch? I had mine fresh I know that much forsure and this was a VERY good experience. I will be back for more. The Dudes nailed this one, balanced, they brought the complexity of all aspects of the hops, enjoyable, drinkable and more. A must try for any DIPA fan out there. I will definitely have this in my fridge at all times. Wow!

Consumed October 24th, 2013 from an undated can I obtained about a week prior. Poured from can into standard pint glass.

Beer is a fairly clear coppery orange. A two finger pale yellow head forms and provides nice, sticky sheeting.

Aroma is mild and all about hops: pine and ruby red grapefruit.

Flavor is sweet caramel, a little herbal note and lots of pine. Bitterness lingers a very long time. Very long. Not especially complex, but if it's bitter hoppiness you seek, this is it.

Mouthfeel is slightly thick, slightly oily and moderately carbonated.

Not essential, but if you're into bitter hop juice type strong IPAs, this ought to make it into your mouth at least once. No attempt at balance or winning the hearts and minds of anyone but the lupulin fiends.

Dark amber colored beer with a tall off-white colored head. I can describe the color best as a burnt orange.

Smell is sweet and woody with a little eucalyptus and orange scents. Unfortunately that is about all not a very aromatic ale.

Starts out sweet and bitter with a woody orange aftertaste. Bittersweet describes the flavor. And that is all she wrote just bittersweet.

Mouthfeel is thick.

Overall, I don't care for this one much.
