"An unexpected visual bend to an American India Pale Ale, this style is one that stands out in a crowd, or if you’re more like us – enjoyed at a campsite…with no crowd." Bonus points for brewers after my own heart. Wish I was sitting by a fire in the Boundary Waters looking out at a lake from a crackling fire. Uh, an unfrozen lake. 12 oz. can that came with five friends.

Pour had already been aptly described in the beer's name: golden. High level of carbonation, & I always enjoy watching bubbles circulate like mad through the beer. Nose pops immediately but fades almost as fast. Pine & citrus, with a bit of mixed fruit salad in the background. Nice start.

Bent Hop teases with scent & then pulls away the chocolate sundae. Replacing it with a nice salad. This is my kryptonite, a nice, sweet, malty, well-balanced IPA. Sweet malt, gentle jab of hops (kind of like a jab from my 11 year old) that rolls a light citrus, touch of orange. Light breading. There is bitterness that's absent at first but grows to noticeable by halfway through the glass. Extremely smooth & creamy for an IPA, & one that would go down nicely leaning on a canoe paddle.

Pretty good beer, but too balanced & lacking in hop character for my jaded palate.

Appearance: Poured light golden-orange with a ting of haziness. One inch of white head that shrank to a nice sprinkled on layer that stayed until the end. Visible carbonation. Lacing excellent.

Smell: Upfront is the American hop flavors; dank citrus-grapefruit with piney notes. The aroma is not as in your face as I've come to expect out of an American IPA. Grassiness a little bit. Some malt comes through in the form of biscuit, maybe a little caramel.

Taste: The hop flavor returns with a vengeance. The resinous and dankness is more available with the grapefruit citrus and pine. Small amount of biscuit malt character past the hops. Finishes dry with a coarser bitterness that lingers for a short time.

Mouthfeel: Light body with moderate to high carbonation. A little prickly on the tongue toward the end. Finishes dry as well.

Overall: A great beer that is easy to drink a lot of. Nice American IPA in my opinion. I would suggest this to others.

A: Golden brown with an impressive white head. Great retention.
S: Smells familiar, like several other common IPAs of this style, with CTZ hops and crystal malt very evident. A little Summit hops in there also? Lots of pine/grass in the aroma.
T: Sweet caramel malt, big doses of hops….floral and grassy up front, with some grapefruit. Also getting a little spicyness in the flavor. Finishes with a brisk, dry bitterness.
M: Feel is pretty smooth for an IPA – medium body with soft carbonation. I like it, but suspect many would prefer it to be more lively.

Overall, a quality beer. I particularly appreciate the smooth mouthfeel. You can do better at $10/6pk, but when in Duluth, I’m sure I’ll make a few more of these disappear.
