Appearance: Dark-tan head sits calmly above the dark depths of this beer. After consuming the black liquid, a nice lacing is left behind to tell the tale. Even nearing the end of the glass a nice creamy layer sits afloat.

Smell: Immediately some sweet chocolate is carried up to my nose, pulling with it a nice roast-toasty note. Caramel sits there with a subtle citrus hop aroma.

Taste: Chocolate roasty character. Caramel and nuttiness shelters the hop presences.

Mouthfeel: Medium-body with good carbonation. Smooth, very smooth.

Overall: This is a very drinkable dark beer with very nice chocolate presence hiding the deeper characters that run deeper down. For a beer with so much in common with stout, I could easily drink many in one sitting with out thinking about it.

Serving glass: Poured from can into Nonic Pint.

Appearance: Black with good sized tan head and nice lacing rings.

Smell: Heavy roasted aroma, with dark chocolate, bitter coffee and smoke. Definite oat aroma as well.

Taste: Similar to the aroma, with very dry, roasted notes of chocolate, coffee and smoke. Some bite at the end from the roasted malts as well as spicy hoppiness.

Feel: Smooth and creamy with moderately low carbonation. The body is lighter than expected. Dry finish.

Overall: The Black Ale name is a bit of a misnomer, as everyone assumes that means Black IPA. This is really an Oatmeal Stout but with a lighter body than expected for the style. This is really good stuff; I just hope people aren't disappointed that this is not a hop bomb.

Big roast and toast nose.
Pours opaque black with a thin head.
Complex rich malts start the palate followed by cola, faint coffee, a touch of cocoa, dark sugars finished with a penetrating citrus rind hop bitterness. The beer has more toast than roast on the palate.
Medium full body with medium light carbonation.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours dark black with a hint of brownish amber. Lots of bubbles and a huge four finger tan head with good retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A sweet and very roasty stout like aroma with big hints of chocolate, oats, and caramel malt. Upfront roasted malts with big hints of chocolate, coffee, biscuit, toasted bread, oats, grains, caramel, toffee, nuts, yeast, vanilla, and cream. Sweet hints of molasses and brown sugar. Background presence of earthy and grassy hops along with light hints of citrus orange. A very good roasty aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a very roasty and fairly sweet and creamy stout like taste with good notes of chocolate and light hops. Dark roasted barley malts with upfront notes of chocolate, coffee, oatmeal, biscuit, toasted bread, grains, caramel, toffee, nuts, yeast, vanilla, and cream. Sweet notes of brown sugar and molasses. Solid backing presence of hops with earthy notes and some subtle citrus notes of orange. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very creamy, silky, and smooth. Finishes somewhat dry.

Overall: A pretty solid dark brew. More like a small stout than black ale. Very good notes of chocolate and oatmeal.

Small light tan head slowly settles into a nice lacing above all clear very dark brown to black colored beer.

Rich dark roasted grain malt aroma with a light coffee hint.

RIch and creamy taste with a lot of the dark roasted malts with a light coffee hint.

Lasting Rich roasted malts and light dryish aftertaste on this full bodied beer.

A very worthy beer.

Thanks to Zeledonia for this can.

A: Pours black with two fingers of light tan head that fades into a thin cap with good lacing.

S: Roasted malts with semi-sweet chocolate and dry, piney hops following. The finish is a little sweeter with a touch of vanilla.

T: Roasted malts here as well with cacao nibs, slight char and smoke, and piney hops. The finish is dry and lightly bitter.

M: Body is on the thicker end of moderate with medium carbonation, this beer is nicely drinkable.

O: An enjoyable beer, overall. It has a good mixture of stout and IPA characteristics and is quite drinkable for the style.
