This old traditional pub dating from 1549 is on a narrow street behind Holborn Tube Station area. If walking along High Holborn from Chancery Lane, as you approach junction with Southhampton Row and Holborn Tube, look for narrow street on left just after Chancery Court, this narrow Street leads into Gate Street, and you will see the pub directly ahead of you.
Six hand pumps serving real ale, two regulars and guest ales plus the usual lagers. Good food menu, though have not tried it, so cannot comment - though heard good reports. Old traditional stripped wooden flooring, wooden panel walls and maritime prints on the walls add to a cosy atmosphere, away from the bustle of the main street. At time of visit, the barman was welcoming and friendly, and in mid afternoon we got a seat easily, though can imagine it could be packed at popular times.
Well worth searching out for a decent pint away from the main bustle of High Holborn, beer prices typical for London pubs.
