L: Light amber body, one finger soapy head
S: Hop forward. Pine, orange citrus, hints of tropical fruit, a bit of toffee
T: Hoppy pine and citrus upfront, orange blossom, bitter pine resin in the middle, with a lovely toasty toffee finish.
F: Smooth, moderate carbonation.
O: Good, but feels like it’s past it’s prime almost, maybe I waited to long. I think it could use a bit of snap, especially on the front end with the hops. Nice toasty malty finish though.

16oz can (canned 11/3/2022) into a tulip. Pours a rich coppery amber with a big fluffy off-white head, lots of nice lacing as it subsides.

Aroma is a really nicely balanced blend of citrusy and floral hops and sweeter, bready caramel malt. I wasn’t sure what a “winter IPA” meant but now I’m getting a better idea.

Taste is likewise a balance between brighter citrusy notes and darker, breadier malt flavors. Orange peel, peppery spice, pine resin. Really hits that sweet spot where neither hops nor malt dominates in a way that few beers achieve. Would love to do a side by side with something like Two Hearted, not that I think they’d be all that close in overall flavor profile.

Mouthfeel is wonderfully full bodied and satisfying. This is more of a West Coast IPA in terms of mouthfeel and finish.

Overall a really great winter IPA and one I’ll be looking for as a go-to in years to come.

Can from ABV

A deep mahogany with a dense, light brown head with good retention and lacing. The nose is a lovely blend of rye and Simcoe, with a nicely pungent Mosaic hop character present with plenty of pine as well. There is a pleasant dark caramel undertone. The palate opens pleasantly bitter with lots of pine, nice caramel, toffee and spicy rye. Rich pine, bitter grapefruit. Drying, bitter finish with lingering pine, grapefruit and citrus. Medium in body, soft carbonation , creamy feel. Tasty.

Look: Rich ruby-red with an awesome-looking off-white head that quickly swells up and holds as a pillow, slowly settling and leaving great lacing behind
Aroma: Grapefruit, navel orange, pine, blueberries, warm brown bread, gooseberries, some toffee, and mandarins
Taste: Starts out with rich, bready dark malt which is almost immediately followed by a huge rush of pithy citrus fruits and rinds and pine sap. After the quick hit of citrus/pine, berries and caramel hold center stage until pine returns to close it out along with a nice bite
Mouthfeel: Full, medium-high carbonation, and moderately dry on the finish
Overall: This is awesome. The neon-colored can art threw me off when I spotted this but once I saw it was Bale Breaker as the brewer, I was in as I’m a huge BB fan. This is, to me, a perfect ‘Winter IPA’ with lots of dark malt body, flavor, and aroma, along with a great combo of two of my favorite hops (Simcoe & Mosaic) all in a delicious package. This made the start of my Friday night and recommended

Beautiful pour, medium amber, crystal clear, frothy head. Pleasant aroma of pine and floral with a malt background. Taste is medium dry, hops out front with the sharpness of the rye for balance. We'd put this into the Winter Warmer style as it's malt base goes well with the modest ABV to produce the right effect.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium to dark, coppery amber with a two finger off-white head with great retention and lacing; looks great. Aroma of caramel and pale malt malt, piney and citrus hops, pine, grapefruit and lemon. Flavor is pale malt with a touch of darker malts, piney and citrus hops, pine needles, grapefruit, lemon with a little grassiness. Lingering, resinous pine finish with assertive bitterness. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. An appropriately piney and bitter winter IPA with fine pine aftertaste. As usual with Bale Breaker, lots of herbal hop flavor. Darker malts are suggested, especially in the deep color, but not as strong in the flavor. I'd like more of the caramel detected in the aroma in the flavor, but these guys tend towards drier, pale malt flavors and this leans that way. The hops fit both the camp and winter motifs really well. A worthy winter IPA. Looks fantastic.

Color is an unusual and attractive chestnut brown, clear and foamy in the wine glass. Smell of cooked cereal and dark bread with winey aroma. Stewed green tea and piney flavors with fruity notes.

This is sort of like a standard Red/Amber Ale, with the roasted malt. But bitterness and serious hoppiness leads it clearly into the IPA camp. And beyond, as it's just too much of everything. From the 16 oz can purchased at Johns Market.

Poured from a 16 ounce can into a snifter.

Look- Deep amber, clear, small particulate sediment, above average head retention and lacing.

Smell- Pine resin, herbal, coffee.

Taste- Piney, bready, slight coffee.

Feel- Between medium and full body, between medium and high bitterness, slightly astringent finish, creamy, slightly below average carbonation.

Overall- Interesting take on a West Coast IPA brewed with non-traditional IPA malts.

Nice amber color, closer to a red ale with thick beige froth retreating to a small lacing clinging to sides of glass. The aroma and flavor are both that wonderful Bale Breaker profile: darkly piney and resinous, these brewers do it some of the best in the business. There is also a sweetness honey graham cracker with a little, almost pepper like spiciness. 16oz cans makes for a winner in my world, it is extra tasty with the darker malt, with super bright hops shining through on this 11 day old can

I had this beer on-tap in a pint glass at Collins Pub in Seattle, WA.

Appearance: ruddy brown hue with a totally clear body and a finger of frothy tan foam. A great lace is left on the glass; I kind of love it.

Smell: sweet, grassy and very slightly fruity hops. It's damn hoppy for a winter warmer, but I'm not complaining.

Taste: fresh, herbal, grassy hops atop a somewhat nutty malt base. Bitterness is pretty high, but it's smooth. Hoppier than normal for the style, but it's balanced and I dig it.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent level of carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: a little sweet and a little heavy to be super drinkable, but the flavor is darn good.

Served On-Tap

A — Pours a deep amber brown hue into the glass, there is a nice off-white colored head that forms on top and leaves behind some nice rings of lace.

S — Smell is strongly pungent on piney bitter hops, notes of lemon peel, pine needles, oak sap, semi-sweet caramel malt base.

T — Boozy initially, but woah hops, notes of pine, citrus, earth, lightly leathery, very nice balance of hops on-top of a caramel malt sweet body.

M — Medium bodied, lingering and crisp finish.

O — Very nice overall, laughable to be called a winter warmer, this has none of the notes found in that style, this is just a darker hued IPA, though it is a damn good one.
