I purchased Polar Night from Ranch Acres Liquor in Tulsa, OK on 12/30/13. Was glad to see it on the shelf as I was curious if another Oklahoma brewer could make a stout capable of tantalizing these taste buds.

Poured from 16oz (1 pint) can into an Anchor pint glass I noticed this thing was thick and viscous. A nice look to it with its golden brown two fingers of thick pillowy foam which hangs around for a long time, even after warming up. The aromas of blended coffee, chocolate malts, burnt cinnamon toast, spicy hops, and smoke grab the attention of the salivary glands. Flavors follow the nose - coffee bean, dark toast, sweet smoke, dark chocolate curls, a flash of vanilla, and a hearty cascadian dark type of hop bite. Very nice full body - velvety, luscious, sticky, and perfect carb. I look for this new Oklahoma brewery to go far and do well. With a year-rounder like this, how could they not? Year-round? Oh, hell yeah!

Pours a nice, large, dark brown and creamy head, with great retention and tons of spiderweb lacing. Dark black beer, as expected.

Surprisingly bright, grassy, bitter aroma, focusing on dank, green hops. Bitter chocolate malt hides in the background. Pleasant, but not what I'm expecting in a traditional stout (then again, the can does mark "aggressiveness" through the roof).

Smooth, bitter, roasty and chocolatey taste. It doesn't at first stand out, but then a huge wave of dark cacao comes rushing over the palate. Huge hoppy bitterness smacks your gums, but leaves only a slight citrus peel flavor behind.

Very smooth, but a little lighter feel overall than I prefer in a stout. No sting; lively and creamy, with a long, lingering finish.

This is a solid, enjoyable stout, probably about on par with Storm King (and in a similar style), but well below the style benchmarks a la FIS. Nor does it bring anything unique enough to the table to stand apart from any other good-but-not-great stout. Certainly worth picking up for a try.

Excellent new brew from Roughtail. I'm excited to see these guys get their stuff out onto the streets...and in 16oz cans no less! Excellent brew, smooth mouth feel, excellent taste and at 8%, it's lower ABV so you can have more than one! The only thing bad about it is it doesn't have much of a smell...but who gives a shit, I'm not sniffin' flowers here, I'm drinkin' it!

Pours an effervescent ebony with 2+ fingers of mocha colored head. Some floaties, great lacing & nice head retention.

S: Carob, roastyness & a bit of raisin

T: Roastyness, dryness, a touch of carob & piney hops up front. More roastyness as this warms, plus dryness, faint carob & bit of pumpernickel & licorice. Finishes dry, roasty, with some Baker's chocolate & a touch of charred grain

MF: Medium bodied, smooth carbonation, nice balance

Drinks very easy, hides the ABV well. I find the floaties a bit off-putting

Poured into a nonic pint glass. One inch had that falls to thin film and leaves good lacing. Aroma is roasted barley and citrusy hops. Flavor is typical rush of roasted malts and coffee flavors with a balancing bitterness. Overall, it is a good call if you like the style.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a pub glass. Received in a trade from OK.

A - Half a finger of light tan head with very short retention. Pours a very dark brown/black and is basically opaque. Little to no lacing.

S - Dark roasted malts. A hint of coffee.

T - Malty flavor with bitterness coming from both coffee and chocolate.

M - Nice and thick up front with lots of carbonation and a dry finish.

O - At 8% and with plenty of body and carbonation it drinks like an imperial stout. Quite delicious.

Yay more tall-boy cans, thanks to rudzud for leaving this one for me, my first from this brewery.

Pours a darker colored fizzy head that hits 1/2 finger and keeps trying to fade quickly but seems to be reinforced, eventually leaves lots of messy lacing, pitch black beer no real light getting through.

Nose is pretty strong and aromatic, nice dark chocolate and cocoa powder, little biscuit and malted milk mall notes, a touch of roast and black malt, with a bit of a fluffy nougat note and some nice caramel, some creamy notes with a hint of milk chocolate and coffee milk. Faint earthy spicy hops in the background.

Taste brings more of the same but this time some bitter roast comes out front, roasted black malt, and some dark roasted coffee beans, etc, then into the big spicy earthy hops, big bitterness with a touch of an orange zest. Quite strong and bold out front. In there is mixed with some creamy oats, a bit of a milk chocolate like flavor, with some bitter roasted coffee, etc. A bit of a very dark bitter chocolate as well, and a mild fluffy nougat note and nice caramel. The chocolate keeps going as it goes. Finish is quite bitter, with more spicy earthy hops, a touch of pine and citrus too that seem to clash a bit wiht the big dark roasty malts, etc. nice layered chocolate, caramel, and roasted malts and coffee lingering.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, bit creamy chewy and fluffy, lighter but decent carb.

Overall OK pretty nice, lots of dark malts, roasty, chocolate, decent creamy oats, roasted coffee, etc etc. HOps are nice at first, but turn a little citrus and piney which clash a bit. Otherwise a pretty nice beer.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a standard pint.

A: Black. 1 finger, foamy head. Plenty of beer ring lacing.

S: Chocolate, coffee, and black licorice.

T: Roasted espresso, and coffee forward. Slight bittering on the back.

M: Hearty and earthy. Chalky finish.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is really nice. Strong head and persistent lacing. Nose is chocolate, coffee, and licorice. Roasted coffee and dark chocolate with a bitter licorice subtly available on the back end. Overall, this is a really good quaff.
