16oz can, glass jar, no freshness date.
This particular strong ale is enthusiastically foamy and chestnut brown. All that head is a darker shade of tan. It's nice looking, with more brown than red.
There's a dusting of cocoa in the nose. Deep sweetness and maltiness, a little nutty and a little like a dense, brown sugar sweetened whole wheat cake. There is a little hop fruitiness dancing around too.
More alcoholic in taste than the nose lets on. Hop and alcohol bitterness more than balance the rich maltiness. It is certainly a strong ale, but not in the mold of Arrogant Bastard. It has more nuance and seems like it might age well if it was a mite less alcoholic. Or more hoppy, but then it would be arrogant.
It's thin and slippery, seemingly something to do with the alcohol. Just a little tickle of carbonation. Pleasant, but I think it could do with some more substance.
I had a can two nights ago and it has certainly grown on me since then. It has more subtle aromas and flavors than I picked up the first time and if you are a fan of this category, I think you'll like 12th Round.

A: Pours a seminal dark brown, bordering on black. Murky and dark, this pours half a finger of tan head. Retention is moderate, as is lacing. Head is comprised of small bubbes.
S: Large roasty notes, with good drops of liquer inspired dark fruit. Dark cherry, strawberry (?!), roasted malt. A touch of chocolate.
T: Big roastiness up front, the same red fruit (cherry, strawberry pectin) flashes across the palate mid swig. Ultimately, a nondescript roastiness/grilled component takes over
M: Light on the tongue, with a slight prickling sensation. Personally, I would like this beer to be chewier. As is, the carbonation inhibits the style.
O: This beer has many redeeming qualitees. I like it for its roastiness and distinct berry quality. However, it lacks depth of flavor and mouthfeel.
