Pours from the can a deep reddish brown with a creamy off-white head. It leaves nice lacing on the pint glass. Smells of roasty malts, caramel and a touch of dark fruit. The taste begins much as the aroma, but ends with a hoppy bitterness. Medium mouth that's rather creamy. I really like the malt profiles tha Roughtail develops in their beers, and this is a great example.

Served at recommended temperature on can (50F) in a snifter. Pours to a rocky beige head that laces well and lasts when given a little regenerative swirl. Color is a deep cherrywood red. Aroma is malty and slightly spicy, suggesting roasted malts, dark caramel malts and spicy/piney hops and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is much like an English "old ale", roasted, brown, and caramel malts with a balance of earthy hops with a dryish, resinous, boozy bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium and slightly warming. Overall a very good strong ale that sits in good company with Pyramid Snow Cap and other such complex darkish strong ales.

Thanks to rudzud for giving me this, another from this interesting brewery. and Yay craft tall-boy cans!

Pours a tan 1/2 finger fluffy head that fades at a slower pace, decent sticky lacing, very dark brown mud molasses colored with pretty much no light getting through.

Nose brings darker sweet malts, candy like, a touch of butterscotch and toffee, biscuity as well, some molasses and candy syrup, bits of dark dried raisin like fruit, and some phenolic booze notes, a bit of an alcohol aroma, mild brown candy malts, but doesn't really seem sweet. Nothing too special though.

Taste brings more candy, lots of candy sweet flavors but not super sweet, lots of toffee and candy brittle, caramel brittle like, melting in my mouth, so much candy, a little nutty note, biscotti even, faint molasses with the caramel and toffee and lots of peanut brittle. A mild creamy note, creamy brown malts, smooth brown malts. A mild spicy hop note kicks in, grassy like, and a phenolic booze kick that hints at a 9% beer not 7.6%. MIld booze warmth with the phenolic tingle. Finish is sticky sweet, syrupy, more brown malts, caramel, lots of caramel and brown malts lingering, and a bit more phenolic booze.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, lighter carb, a little phenolic booze, mild syrupy but smooth creamy too.

Overall OK, nothing too special, decent all around, could use some work, but otherwise not bad.

Received as an extra in a trade and poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice deep dark brown that doesn't let light through. Very nice two finger off white lightly tan creamy head that fades to leave nice side lacing. Almost looks like a stout.

S - Aromas of sweeter, toasted malts, flashes of chocolate, lighter dark fruits.

T - Taste is similar to the nose. Sweeter toasted malts, light chocolate, rich malts, some nice spicy hops and a little bit of fruit. The hops are a nice balance to the malty sweetness. Alcohol hidden well, the more I drink this the more I enjoy it and its balance. As it warms I get a flash of coffee on the finish.

M - Mouthfeel is rather thin and slick, lowly carbonated.

O - Overall, this beer had its highs and lows. Awesome appearance and solid taste can kind of make one forget about the sub par aroma and mouthfeel.

I've had this beer a few times now so it's time to garner a review.

A- Pours dark dark brown, but clear, letting very little light through. At first glance you could mistake it for a stout, but holding it up to the light reveals its deep dark brown color. Depending on pour, forms a modest khaki-brown head with very little lacing.

S- Comes on immediately with toasted malt, followed by a bit of dark chocolate. The balance comes by way of a slight fruity, hoppy note. It's subtle, but helps temper some of the sweetness of the nose.

T- Taste very similarly follows the nose. First a wave of malty richness. Followed by a bit of creaminess that transitions right into the slight spicy and fruity hops. For a brief second, there is a quick hit of the high abv of this beer, then it quickly fades. The hops provide a spicy, slightly fruity flavor to balance out the sweet and malty first impression.

M - The mouthfeel is somewhat thin, but not unlike many ales. It is definitely contrary to the appearance, but makes this beer feel less heavy and puts more weight on the flavor.

O - 12th round is somewhat surprising. At first the mouthfeel is somewhat shocking given the appearance and smell. This beer is largely dominated by toasty malted flavors. The hops help give it a nice balance. Overall I enjoy this beer quite a bit.
