Notes from 08/18/13 - 4oz taster
A: Light amber body appearance with a dark caramel tone to it and some fine clarity. Half finger of light khaki foam with modest retention efforts and a bit of trellising lace work down the glass as the drink progresses.
S: The nose is comprised of lightly toasted malts with some caramel like sweetness and a good classic mix of pine and citrus zest. Not incredibly pungent on the hops but nice and inviting.
T: Tastes follows the nose with and a good mix of American C hops that are orange/citrus and fresh evergreens. There is a firm caramel malt sweetness to the beer that brings this one slightly on the sweeter side. The beer has a moderate amount of perceived bitterness and the alcohol is kept in good check. All in all some nice balance and a classic take on the style with nothing over the top.
M: Moderate heft in the body with a nice creamy texture and peppery bitterness aided by the carbonation. A little watery overall with a good attempt of drying on the finish and a slight lingering of hop oils and malt sugars.
D: Decent brew with nothing too stand out. Good classic flavors of pine and citrus. Nice balance overall. Not bad.

There doesn't seem to be any smell to this. Color is an attractive orangey dark amber in the Duvel glass. Starts with a nice foam, each pour, but it doesn't last long.
The flavor is strangely flat. Is there a hint of nuts in the aftertaste? It tastes like plastic at first. Some roasted malt and a winey, rose flavor. There is not actually any bitterness in this. It's the strangest thing. I taste the stale pecans, the warm, soupy, slightly sweet grain-- but no hops. And the worst-- a burp and it's the plastic flavor.
This seems to be a case of not getting the most important IPA element right-- the hops. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Baron's Market on West Point Loma. They have four or five of the Aftershock beers, only place I've seen the bottles in San Diego.

Pours a clear dark orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, citrus zest, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the mouthfeel needs some work.

This is not your typical SoCal IPA. Personally, I think the market is saturated with over-the-top hopped IPAs. This has that slight bitterness throughout, but it doesn't overpower so you still get strong flavors from the barley and yeast. It pours with a nice head that doesn't linger too long, which is much to my liking. And the aroma is malty and citrusy. The pours I've had were not under-carbonated, but weren't over-fizzed either.
I think Aftershock has done a great job in creating an IPA that is not mainstream.
