Dark walnut brown, near black in the Einbecker glass. The foam is putty color and quite persistent. Prickly on the tongue.
The first taste is sweet malt on the lips. A bitter chocolate taste with some minty and winey notes. Burnt grainy taste and then charcoal. Then after a couple of sips it turns into the hop show.
I don't understand how this can start out so sweet and malty and then turn so excruciatingly bitter. These guys take this Cascadian nonsense very seriously. Herbal, even medicinal bitterness takes over like a very large and bad-tempered dog.
Another potentially good beer spoiled by totally gratuitous bitter hopping. From the growler purchased at the brewery restaurant in Bellingham.
Serving type: growler
