If it's an IPA brewed in San Diego and bottled in the 22 ounce format, chances are it must be good. This bottle was purchased in Poway and poured into an imperial pint glass. On to the beer:

The head on top forms about a half-inch and retains in a decent manner. Beneath is the mango orange colored body. A little webbed lace sticks around the glass as the beer goes down. The aroma brings a combination of two versions of IPA; fruity and hoppy, and grassy and hoppy. There's some mango and toasted sugar to go with the fruit and grass.

Success with the flavor. Modest herbal notes mixed with fruity, juicy hops. Specifics include mango, piney, and grapefruit notes. As expected, the beer is quite hoppy, but with just a dusting of sugar coating, it doesn't get too bitter. The beer is medium bodied and has a texture which is somewhat smooth.

Should I be surprised? One more pleasing IPA out of San Diego.

A: Moderately hazy, light golden (pilsner) color. Poured into a frozen pint glass with no head, and only a island of smaller bubbles in the middle of the glass.

S: Good nose; lots of florals, fruits, and pine. Smells delicious.

T: Interesting. Starts with a very mild fruit sweetness and some earthy, spicy hops. The fruits are more subdued than the smell would lead you to believe; maybe more melon than other sweeter fruits. Mid-taste never really hits the malts, though it does finish with earthy, citrusy hops. No hint of its 6.8% abv in the taste.

M: Medium thickness/quickness. Moderate- carbonation; less than most other IPAs. Medium stickiness on the tongue after swallowing.

O: Not a bad brew, but in the IPA jungle that is Southern California, there are no shortage of other brews that are better. I would like to see the clarity/head retention cleaned up a bit, the fruity/malty taste kicked up a notch, and the carbonation increased a half volume or so.

On tap at True North in the North Park area of San Diego.

Pour is light amber-gold with fine-grained visible carbonation and a very durable, semi-creamy off-white head. Exceptional sticky lacing.

Smell: strong and pungent (hops).

Taste: Not as intense as the aroma suggests yet this could still pass as a DIPA. Medium-high bitterness. Bitterness is moderated by some malts. .

Feel: medium body; medium-high but soft carbonation.

O: Very good IPA IF you like this hop load ... but not my cup of tea.

This beer has a sharp, bitter hop forward taste. This is not unlike many of the San Diego IPAs (Green Flash, Stone, Ballast Point etc) Contrasted to Russian River, Lagunitas, Firestone IPAs it is (in my opinion) very unbalanced. Northern Cal seems to have a better handle on the hop + malt backbone IPA vs. the jarring hop bite of San Diego brews.

While partial to SOCAL-style IPAs (if it isn't yet, "SOCAL IPA" should be an official beer style), I particularly like this offering. A refreshing slight-pine, slight-citrus taste that isn't too overpowering with malt or hops (although the bias is definitely more towards hops). I particularly like that it now comes in 12 oz cans. One of the great San Diego offerings (yep... I am biased towards SD too).

Poured into a Stone Brewery flute glass. Pours an orange tinted golden amber with a half finger white head that dissipates to a thin film and ring around the glass, leaving light lacing. Nice aroma of pineapple and tropical fruit, herbal citrus and grassy hops. Flavor is citrus and tropical fruit juice, sweet neutral malt and grassy hops with a long grassy hop bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied. A well made IPA that is more aromatic in the aroma than the taste, but well balanced and pleasant to drink. The hops seem less herbal in the taste than the aroma, but still and enjoyable IPA.

Ummmm. Yeahhh. Uhhh...

This beer is ok. But as a playa steps his game up, ok just isn't going to cut it. Did Rocky eat Del Taco before his big match? I don't think so. It smells... It tastes... Not like Lily Aldridge after a hot wash, no no. It's a bit grainy in texture, and there is too much acidity in the aftertaste. It's juicy enough like my neighbor in a 2 piece, but I probably won't take another look.

Peace!
