Formerly Illusive Traveler Grapefruit Shandy

The mother of all citrus, the behemoth from Barbados, the original forbidden fruit. It’s big, it’s juicy, and it’s in your beer. Presenting Traveler™ Grapefruit Shandy. You don’t need a tiny arsenal of bowls, knives and mini spoons to enjoy the good stuff. Full flavor with the tart tang you’d expect from a lusciously ripe grapefruit, balanced by a smooth, refreshing finish you can only get with a shandy.

Appearance: Cloudy with a retained 1/2 inch slightly off-white head

Smell: Definite citrus aroma dominated by the grapefruit. Smells like the pith of the fruit with some orange as well. No hint of alcohol and not much hop presence.

Taste: Sweetness right off the bat with a low amount of carbonation. Smooth and silky from the wheat. Tart and with a slight tart bitterness that lingers.

Mouthfeel: low carbonation and wheat make for a silky smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: A nicely balanced and authentic tasting shandy. A little overly sweet for me in the front but calms down nicely in the middle and back. Refreshing and one of the better shandies I've had.

I'm so depressed I can't find this stuff anymore. Was it something to drink everyday? No. A replacement for all other beverages? No. But was it the greatest ever drink for eating tacos? Yes. Yes it was. I don't even quite know what it was, but for a while there I'd buy a pack whenever it was time to have Mexican food because, I swear on all that is holy, nothing --NOTHING-- paired better with a taco, or a tamale, or even, heck, an enchilada than the illusive traveler grapefruit shandy. The fact it's not in my life anymore makes every taco less exciting, and as a result I'm honestly more comfortable with the concept of mortality because to exist beyond the pleasures of existence is to hardly exist at all.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip

A- pours clear golden color with a one-finger foamy white head that has short retention

S- smells of grapefruit juice and zest, lemon, grainy malt, a hint of honey

T- zesty grapefruit up front gives way to a juicy grapefruit note mid-palate. The finish gives a hint of sweet malt, honey and more grapefruit juice

M- light-medium body with moderate carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and a crisp finish

O- goes down easy, high drinkability

Not as bad as Leinie but still pretty tart. I do not like grapefruit beers, but I figured I would try one anyway. This is a beer with mildly weird acidic character and not a good one. I would travel on with this one.

July 5th, 2015 - The Illusive Traveler (favorite beer of the Elusive Man from Mass Effect?) was available at the Landsdowne Arms, one of my favorite restaurants in the Highlands Ranch area. It's a citrus heavy beer which is fine for the weather, but not great for heavy Irish cuisine. Bright orange and extremely hazy, it looks like a glass of cream based soup, but the nose is pregnant with lemon notes and a clear acidity. On the tongue it is sweet, but the citrus shifts from lemon to grapefruit. Dry and sweet, it is tasty and lasts well into the aftertaste. If I say that this has a lot of grapefruit in it, I want to insist that it is the sweetest, juiciest parts of the grapefruit at peak ripeness.

L: Murky yellow-orange color. Small bubbly head.

S: Heavy on grapefruit, light on malt.

T&F: Again, heavy on the grapefruit flavor. Very sweet and does not have the puckering quality that grapefruit juice by itself has, but it does have a dry finish.

O: Not terrible, but there are better grapefruit shandys out there.
