From the depths of my well (over?)-stocked reefer comes yet another out-of-season surprise!

From the bottle: "Ale brewed with lemon peel with natural flavors and pumpkin added"; "Quite a Refresher!"

I went with an aggro pour to try and stir up anything that may have flocculated while this was being held in abeyance. I still only mamaged too produce a finger of soapy, tawny head with moderate retention as a result. Color was an orangish-copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled like pumpkin pie spices - cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice. I did not really get lemon, but that's okay, since it would be kind of out of place. Mouthfeel was kind of thin, which is common to shandys, apparently. The flavors were kind of riotous in the mouth, loads of spices, the lemon peel asserting itself and even a molasses sweet-bitterness. The finish was semi-sweet and the molasses taste overcame the spices in an unexpected twist. This was a curious drink. I may not have liked it as much in the Fall, when I was inundated by Pumpkin Beers, but as an out-of-season break from Summer seasonals, it was pretty good.

So I tossed this into a build your own 6 pack with 5 other pumpkin beers last October, not really expecting much since I've had a couple other Travelers beers and was not impressed at all. But damn, this was delicious.

Did it taste much like beer? No. Was it a sweet, cinnamon, brown sugary, pumpkin delight? Yes. I much prefer Southern Tier, Weyerbacher, or Flying Dog's pumpkin ales, but this was far superior to the other widely available options, such as Sam Adam's, Brooklyn, Leinenkugal, or Blue Moon.

In summation... This was a really enjoyable beer and I recommend picking up a 6 pack during the holidays, maybe just to share with any family and friends who aren't avid beer drinkers. It's good. Try it.

Such a surprising and fun taste that it's almost a spoil to say that it is alcoholic ( even at less than 5.5%). A really friendly beer, don't take it too seriously because it is meant to be a holiday palate stimulator to get you ready for thanksgiving. Really great for the fall season! Remember to judge it as it is supposed to be judged: a seasonal "candy" beer low in ABV that is merely supposed to taste good and get your taste buds ready for thanksgiving

A- pours a dark amber color with a fizzy two-finger head that reduces to a small fizzy layer

S- at first it smells like a wittier with lots of lemon peel, but as it warms some clove, coriander and nutmeg comes out, along with some cinnamon chewing gum

T-It's definitely got that classic shandy flavor; candied lemon peel and coriander with that pseudo-lemonaide flavor. Some of the pumpkin spices kick in mid-palate with cinnamon sweetness and clove. sweet finish with more spice linger, flavors of cola

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel and a crisp finish

O- I wasn't sure about the concept of a pumpkin shandy, it was actually better than expected but not something I'd go after again. A different switch up in the pumpkin ale category

Aroma: Lots of ginger and lemon in the initial aroma. A light nutmeg aroma arrives as this is swirled. Sweet and tart battle it out on the nose.

Appearance: Deep orange in color. There is a slight haze, but not much. Large off-white head that persists well.

Flavor: A tart lemon flavor fades to a sweet classic pumpkin pie finish. I get nutmeg at the back of the tongue and a dry sweet-tart finish. No hop at all. Mouthfeel is just a bit more than light. The spicing is perfect--bringing out the pumpkin pie flavors well. As it warms though, this beer gets a bit flabby and loses its edge.

Overall: A good experiment that I didn't think would work. Better than expected, and refreshing. Drink it fast, though because it is best cold.
