look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.5

Bottled Dec. 8, 2013

A - Pours with a nice deep copper body and a light tan head. Good lacing and minimal head retention.

S - A somewhat light pine hoppy nose. Not sweet, but a good amount of toffee and caramel character.

T - Pine along with toffee/caramel. Bready malts. And not really sweet at all.

M - Medium bodied and carbonation. Has a dry finish and the abv is not well noticed.

O - It's a good barleywine. Not over the top great, but solid. And something seemed off with it as well. I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Cloudy brown complexion with a fingernail of khaki colored head. Faint Brussels lacing. Bold aroma of obnoxiously sweet malt. The flavor closely mirrors the aroma with loads of bready malt. It seems pretty strait forward. The mouth is a bit thinner than the typical Barleywine which translates to a bit better drinkablity. It's still just as sticky and a bit chewy.

Pours a rich copper color with minimal lacing and head retention. It smells of hops and yeast, with some sour (but not displeasing) odor I can't place. It's a little hoppier than I like a barleywine to be, but the bitterness isn't overpowering. There's also a nice caramel/toffee flavor that seems pretty much essential to the style. Mouthfeel is a good density but slightly over-carbonated, although the carbonation varied between the two bottles I've tried. Overall, it's a solid American barleywine, but I can't have any beer of the style without wishing it was instead an English barleywine.

Bottle dated Dec. 8th, 2013, consumed March 8th, 2014. My third bottle from this batch.

Appearance- Deep, deep ruby. Average carbonation for the style. Rocky, tan , lingering head.

Smell- Floral and fruity toffee. Burnt sugar.

Taste- Piney, floral, sweet raisiny toffee. Very smooth given how fresh it is, yet still crisp and bitter.

Mouthfeel- Seems thin for the style, and I'm not new to it. Reminds me of some imperial reds.

Overall-
Hands down the best local strong ale I've ever had, though competition is slim. Reminds me of Bigfoot with a year on it, yet as hoppy as Bigfoot is fresh. Really hope to see it again, and excited to try more from this brewer.

Pours a slightly hazy, brown color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and decent lacing. Smells of alcohol, sweet malt, hint of roasted malt, hops, hint of dark citrus, and yeast. Fits the style of an American Barleywine. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, alcohol, hint of roasted malt, hops, and yeast. Overall, decent appearance, good aroma, but only decent body that lacks complexity and is slightly muted.
