Poured from the bottle into a curved wheat ale glass.

Deep chestnut brown to rust copper red body, fairly opaque with nice long even streams coming in pinhead bubbled waves. Head is classic foamy, evenly pinhead yellow to tan color. Minimal retention, a slow fall as the head settles nicely. Very good looking weizenbock.

Large cinnamon and clove notes, with a big hint of licorice quality coming from the anise. Excellently spiced and winter warmer like in a way with less of a fruity tone. Lots of sharp and peppery sweet brown spices come all over this with a good mincemeat pie like quality. Real nice.

Palate takes a bit of getting used to. The spice angle is big and full on this in the mid palate, but it's very hot, and almost too much. Big burning clove and a nice touch of pepper quality. Some sweetness catches in but the body is quite weak with a bit of a watery character, not making the flavors last. Finishes cinnamon red hot to some degree. Mild banana like esters just barely peak out.

Hottest winter beer I've had to date I guess, but also missing lots of classic Weizen malt and yeast character. The weak body doesn't help much either unfortunately.

I don't know where this low rating comes from. This is a much better beer than what is shown above. Second to review this bad boy! Beerchitect was the other one. Man that guy's liver has to be about to give out. I know mine is and I haven't drank anywhere close to his numbers. I am kidding. Great job man, seriously I am just jealous that I am not at your numbers. HA! Alright moving on! By the way this was an extra on a trade. Super guy! Thanks so much man and cheers to you!

Appearance: Beautiful bronze color. Hazy with a decent amount of head that lingers throughout the entire pour. This is the first Weizenbock that I am aware of drinking anyway, so I don't know what the beer should look like compared to others, but this is a very nice looking beer in all respects.

Nose: Before I read on the side of the bottle that there was star anise in the beer I thought this beer smells a lot like absinthe! The licorice note, but not dominant either. It has some nice ester forward yeast aromas. Bready malts and other warming spices like clove and cardamom are present. Very nice!

Taste: Those aromas on the nose are very much present in the taste. It has a warming of alcohol and a nice fruity Belgian beer like taste. Bananas are another flavor of particular notice. Very complex and tasty beer here. Also the beer is very thick and robust but it is not cloying at all and the finish is very clean. No residue.

Overall: As I stated before this was the first Weizenbock I had ever had and I really enjoyed it. It reminds me of a light Belgian Quad in that respect. I will have to seek out this style more in the future. As for the 76 rating on here. I have no idea how they have calculated that number. This beer is much better than that!

Beautiful boldness and highly variant in character, Polar Bier opens with a malty perfume of candied fruit; a clove, cinnamon, nutmeg medley; and a spicy rum tingle to the nose. While its succulent sweetness coats the tongue, its dark fruit flavor and strong caramels soon take hold.

Its decadent cake-like body takes on the proportions of rum, spice and fruit with plum, prune, apple, raisin, date and fig. Cherries, grape and lemon offer mild acidity while peppercorn, rye bread and freshly grated white pepper provide more balance than do the minty and stemmy hops.

Slight vinous wine character frames the finish while the final peps of chai and rum give the spicy and powerful closure that this rich ale deserves. I'm happy that weizenbock doesn't come in any larger of format. Not because of its strength, but because this style delivers so much complexity, the explanation of flavor can go on and on.

Strong upstart of chai and rum. peppercorn, ginger and a rye bite
