Appearance- Received with basically no head but it appears to have been a medium beige with slight rose notes. The body is a deep maroon/burgundy with hints of chestnut brown. Not as much brown and more crimson when held up to the light.

Nose- Very interesting aroma that suggests many different beer style. Very vinous with lots red grapes and prunes. Some chocolate notes plus mint and minor hints of gin. Slight funkiness, slight tartness. Some notes of acetic acid. Maybe even a little spruce.

Taste- Very reflective of the nose and starts off with the fruit esters and the vinosity. Raisins, red grape, prunes, some dark cherry that leads to a pretty broad chocolate middle. Some mint, slight pine and resin on the finish. Mild acetic acid on the front. Slight astringency and medicinal notes that seem to come from the gin. Normally, I wouldn't appreciate gin elements in my beer but it seems to work here. Complex without being messy. Not exactly a match for my palate but I understand why it has received the high ratings it has. No indication of heat. Slight chalkiness, some oak. Definite spruce and juniper as well. Solid, good beer that just happens not to work for me. I won't be having this again but not because of any flaws or deficiencies. I don't always like De Garde's beers but they certainly keep interesting and could never be accused of being boring.

Mouthfeel- A little more than light bodied with mild carbonation that has a slight carbonic sting that works with the gin and spice elements of the palate. Nice dry finish.

Drinkability- Fairly accessible for a beer that doesn't really match up with my preferences. $4.25 seems reasonable for 25 cL pour of a barrel aged wild ale.

Overall- Solid beer that doesn't work for me. No flaws and pretty much matches up with a description. Worth a try but I won't be drinking this again.

Tiny growler from Imperial Bottleshop.

Pouring a hazy, murky, mildly muddy dark brown, this beer is capped with a dense, brown head with excellent retention and lacing. The nose is pretty intense, with the combination of gin aromatics and hops working nicely. The hops are minty and earthy, which does work with the juniper and mild coriander note. The roast adds an intriguing depth to the already dense nose with the combination of juniper and cocoa being really interesting. There's a booziness, not unlike a cheap gin, that grows as the beer warms up.

The palate, on the other hand, is a bit of a trainwreck. Boozy gin, bitter, grainy astringency and earthy, minty hops make for a rather overbearing palate. Mild cocoa and coffee grounds character are present on the mid-palate, lending a roasty sweetness. Drying on the finish with earthy bitterness, grainy astringency and juniper, this is quite a misfire. Medium in body and moderately carbonated, I can't say I'm a fan.

On tap at Belmont Station the other day.

The beer pours a murky dark brown color with fair at best head retention and minimal lacing. This is a beer that has the look of one that has seen some serious barrel aging (which I assume it has). On the nose, the aroma profile is interesting, though at least for me, not hugely appealing. The gin barrel aroma is very promient, and as the menu at BS indicates, it tends to impart something of a minty aroma, along with the milk chocolate, vanilla and light coffee I'm picking up. It's interesting, but I'm not convinced the base beer blends in very well with the gin flavor. On the palate, at least for me this is a complete fail. The gin flavor is just too over the top, and in fact it was starting to make me feel slightly sick to my stomach the more I drank of this beer. Yes, there's some nice chocolate, vanilla and light coffee as well (the base beer seemed like a very well made RIS), but the gin flavor also gives the beer something of a sour wine flavor, that along with the gin flavor, was just not working for me. Mouthfeel was soft and full, and the finish was quite long in this moderately sweet RIS. The carbonation level seemed to be dialed down in this beer, which worked well with the flavor profile. Alcohol is pretty noticeable in this beer, but I didn't pick up any heat or alcoholic bite on the finish.

Obviously, this beer is/was just not my cup of tea. I do give De Garde high marks for creativity and effort, but I just felt this effort was ultimately a miss. Oh well...

On tap at De Garde

A: Hazy brown

S: Gin, chocolate, hops

T: Citrus and bitterness from the hops right away with a very clear gin barrel presence, slight tartness and chocolate are in the background but are a critical part of this beers taste. Crazy complex.

M: Just a bit on the dry side

O: Really incredibly unique, I can't compare this to anything. Also, it was delicious!
