Served at the De Garde tasting room. I got the second to last pour - arrived just in time! Review from memory the following day.
A: murky, cloudy light brown, yellowish color. Kind of like applesauce, but thin. The bright, tightly packed 1 1/2 inch head bumped it up on an appearance. But I didn't spend much time looking at the beer, since I could smell it as it was delivered.
S: Hop explosion. Thick, juicy, citrus hops were just unbelievable in this one. I don't remember how many pounds of hops went into this, but it had to have been a lot. The brewer did say they were almost all post boil. The aroma was through the roof.
T: The citrus bomb continues. They really captured the essence of hop in this beer. In the taste, there are some hints of funk that provide a little earthiness to the beer. I think in time, that could become a little more prevalent. But really, this beer is meant to be drank now.
M: thick, almost chewy. Very obviously not filtered. Carbonation was perfect though. And it didn't coat like a big imperial stout, so the thickness didn't seem out of place for the big hops and high alcohol. Unlike some big DIPA's, this didn't come across as sweet or cloying at all. Definitely on the dryer side for a 10% DIPA.
O/A: Overall, this was an outstanding beer for anyone who loves hops. So very drinkable at 10%, dangerously so. Brewer said they're doing this one again, with a different hop profile. I look forward to it. The collaboration with Engine House produced one of the best hoppy beers De Garde has ever made. If it wasn't for nearly two hour drive back home and the keg blowing, I could have drank many glasses of this.
