Not pleased with this beer very earthy tea like flavors and almost little to no hop flavors might of been old but still should of tasted better

On Tap at the Brewery – Temecula, CA
Notes from 08/18/13 - 4oz taster

A: Light golden amber hues with near perfect clarity and visible carbonation. A half finger of paper white suds forms displaying some decent hang time and a little etch work of lace is left behind after each sip.

S: Caramel sweet malts dominate the bulk of the nose. There are some nice grapefruit, citrus, and pine notes and underpins of perfumey floras. Not bad but a bit malty sweet.

T: Fairly sweet with the caramel malts and some underlying breadiness. The 95 IBU’s assert a rather moderate to high level of bitterness however the flavors get a bit obstructed by a heavier use of Crystal malts it seems. Perhaps not fully attenuated. Either way some grapefruit and piney hops do eventually make an appearance along with some nice floral qualities. Just seems a bit hindered. Alcohol is well disguised throughout. Not bad but falls a little too much on the sweeter side.

M: Moderate to light in body and feel with a nice creamy texture and slight drying in the finish. There is a higher level of perceived bitterness across the palate. Fairly clean on the linger.

D: A decent IPA but nothing that would stand out amongst all of the SoCal greats these days. A little too heavy on the sweet Crystal malt selections. Shame as it really seems to mute out the wonderful hop flavors that are present.
Another one I think can be good if they continue to do some fine tuning.

Long-lasting foam in the Duvel tulip with a golden amber color. Aroma of grapefruit and something flowery. Quite spritzy in the mouth.

This is a big, bitter kind of IPA. It's dripping with hop oils and the acidity that goes with an overabundance of hops. Starts with massive grapefruit peel and descends into total bitterness. If there are some malt flavors my tongue is too buckled to determine.

This is pretty much the textbook example of a "West Coast" IPA. The rest of the bottle will serve for bittering some innocuous brew. Too bitter to be very drinkable but the hop obsessives will want to try this one. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Barons Marketplace in San Diego.

On tap at Wiens Brewing Company in Temecula, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and pine flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

On-tap at the source itself in a half-pint serving, on to the beer:

Looking like hazy grapefruit skin in the body, though on top the head is creamy and sturdy and leaves a very good quantity of lacing around. The aroma could be described as "dank"; a blast of citrusy aromas which include juicy grapefruit and a helping of melon. So perhaps it is no surprise that Insomnia is hop dominant is flavor as well. Grapefruit again is dominant, followed by lemon and grassy notes, and just a note of malt to back it up. It's medium/full bodied, so don't rush it.

Appearance: Cloudy straw colored with a huge head that took a really long time to fade.

Smell: WOW! Big time fruity hops.

Taste: Pretty strong bitterness right up front that slowly fades into the thick, slightly sweet malt backbone. The bitterness is never completely covered up; it sticks around until the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Creamy mouthfeel was somewhat thick for an IPA and moderately carbonated.

Overall: Really good, mostly because of the massive hop aroma. This is very close to DIPA intensity, although it is not as bitter as I would expect based on the smell alone. If you can get it fresh, do so. The bottle I had was straight from the brewery.

Decent IPA but somehow lacking. It hits all the right notes but nothing about this beer will make you rave about it.

From a bomber into tulip glass from Knee Deep Brewery. Great tasting IPA. Smell is strong and taste is citrus with dank pine. Little to no malt taste which is just the way I like it. Exceptional lacing and smooth aftertaste. Will definitely buy again.
