Type 3 IPA - 6.5% ABV 75 IBU

On Tap at the Brewery – Temecula, CA
Notes from 08/18/13 - 4oz taster

A: Shade darker caramel amber color with some really well conditioned clearness to the beer. Thin cap of egg white foam slips away to just a crown with some pretty minimal lace action.

S: Smells like a cat piss bomb! Must be Simcoes and possibly some Citras up in here. Incredibly fragrant and pungently catty. Loads of tropical fruit character combined with pine sap and grapefruit zest. There is a light caramel malt sweetness coming through but this is one hoppy aroma highlighted by that musky cat-like tropic herbal.

T: Hop medley of pine, grapefruit, tropicals, and catty herbs. Really nice and fruity with some lychee fruit like elements. Malt is pretty mellow with just a slight caramel sweetness and bits of sugary cracker. Finishes out more herbal and dank. There is an upper level of bitterness to the beer and alcohol is incredibly well masked. Really quite tasty unless you aren’t really into the catty Simcoe thing.

M: Moderate to lighter feel with a nice creamy texture and ample carbonation levels. High puckering bitterness. Finishes with a nice dry crisp and long resinous after effect.

D: Dem Cat Pee! Possible turn off for others here but this was much more on point with the west coast style overly hopped IPA’s that I have grown to love. With some nice tropical and danky herbal qualities.

The Type 3 was actually one of my favorite offerings of the day to the point I did take home a growler.

Spicy, richly hopped brew. Plenty of foam on the dark amber brew. Clear and burnt orange-tinged in the wine glass. A nice spritz in the mouth. Light bodied with just a slight oily note.

Some dark notes with the malty flavors and roasted grain. A touch of sweetness to go with the tanginess. Deep resiny hop taste and full of aromatics. Some funk that would be at home in a Belgian IPA plus some fermented pineapple. One of the brewers was serving and he said Mosaic was the main hop here, though I see they also list Simcoe, Palisade, Glacier, Chinook.

Some citrus hotness but it's a nice rotation from the grapefruit peel overload type of IPA. This is still full of hops and plenty bitter, but it has a nice intensity of flavor that goes beyond the bitterness. This would be one of my top five IPAs of 2013, but I'll have to start over for 2014. From the 32 oz growler bought at the brewery in Temecula.

Great hops on the nose when you crack the bottle. Zesty grapefruit peel coming through strong with a dry bitter finish. West Coast IPA style all the way. Not a lot of lacing - small off white head. Kind of reminds me of Big Barrel Double IPA from Karl Strauss (only not quite as good - something about that one I love so dear!) Great beachside brew.

Pours a murky dark honey orange with a foamy orange-beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, candied citrus zest, and slight herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with candied citrus zest and grapefruit juice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with nice citrus forward hop qualities all around.

copper color. off-white head. hops aromas come off the bottle as soon as the cap is lifted.
distinct hops and sweet bready and caramel malt aromas. same for the taste, but a very thin feel on the palate. easy to drink due to the thinness but i'm getting a slight eucalyptus taste(??) from it. is that weird or what? I agree with the other guy, a very nice IPA without all the grapefruit slam everyone is getting accustomed to. less eucalyptus but still a different kind of bitterness. overall, a very nice brew....

A- Pours a deep reddish hue with a thick, chunky, massive head that leaves lots of lacing on the way down.

S- Grapefruit, citrus, sweet maltiness.

T- Deep and bready with undertones of tangerine, grapefruit and kumquat.

M- Medium/Full bodied with ample carbonation. Resiny.

D- An excellent IPA. Picked it up randomly on a trip to san diego but will certainly seek it out in the future.

Sampled on tap at Srone as they didn't have anything interesting of their own wares on tap. Rich reddish brown with a slight head that dissipates into nice lacing. Nose presents sage, juniper, lemon and sweet malt backing. Sweet flavor up front with nice spicy hop notes on the back end. Flavor cut through the spicy flavor of my Peruvian chicken entree and paired wonderfully.
