On Tap at the Brewery – Temecula, CA
Notes from 08/18/13 - 4oz taster
Labeled as a Bourbon Barrel Barley Wine – 11.5% ABV – 70 IBU’s
A: Ruddy brownish amber color with a muddled transparency. Small rim of khaki bubbles presents a quick show of relatively low retention efforts. Some light dots of stick noted down the glass.
S: Fruity plum like esters abound with a caramel raisin and fig nougat like aroma. Caramel malt and biscuit meets with a light earthy vanilla and scorched oak barrel presence. There are some piney hops mixed in as well. Alcohol is rather tame considering. Smells the part and very inviting although not incredibly heavy on the bourbon notes.
T: Caramelized stone fruits like plum and fig with raisin nougat. Soft barrel notes surface through some vanilla crème and earthy charred oak. There is a light moderate pine hop bitterness to the beer. Alcohol is well known but not hot or off-putting. This is quite nice with well balance.
M: Heavy body but not incredibly thick. The carbonation seems a bit low which does not aide in that department and there is a present alcohol warming. Moderate low bitterness. Somewhat smooth overall but a bit heavy and sticky.
D: Surprisingly good with some really nice balance and developed flavors. Would recommend. This would seemingly do well with some bottle conditioning.
