Lovely in the glass as the head rises to a lacy top with a denser concentration as it nears the dark sticky liquid in the glass. Cola colored and clear with a light absorbing quality. Good lacing and retention. A syrupy stickiness in the liquid as it runs down the glass. Nose is filled with complexity. Dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, pumpkin, the usual pie spices. Nice english ale yeast and its accompanying fruitiness. Taste is like a nice cup of pumpkin coffee. Roasted grains and pie spices play over a gentle gourd presence. This has the effect of substituting the spices for the hops. Where a healthy amount of pumpkin has the effect of amping up the malt, this considerable spicing elevates the hops. Speaking of they are earthy and crisp. No citrus, just firm dryness that harkens back to a dry stout porter of old world origins at the heart of this one. The maca gives a dry tannic edge that I have noted in other Kuka beers. A raisiny sweetness hides any alcohol that may have tried to show itself though I can't really find any. Feel is the high point on this one and I think the maca contributes here as well as I remember a lovely velvety sensation as I had the some of the other beers from this brewery. The carbonation is crisp while maintaining a mild creaminess. This is rich full bodied porter that leans on the drier side of things with a high amplitude pumpkin spicing. The dryness allows you to session this one more than you might think but in the end it is still very much in your face with the pumpkin personality. If you are on the fence on pumpkin ales approach this one with caution as it is not shy. For me I like it quite a bit. I usually find this amount of spicing overwhelming, but the intense roastiness of the malt, along with the pumpkin and yeast allow this one to find a nice balance and hang together well. A great cold night sipper in the holiday season, just what I'm doing tonight.

Billed as a “perfect brew for the impending Autumn chill”, the Pumpkin Porter features sweet pumpkin aromatics, a spice driven middle and a dry, roasty finish.
From 10/17/13 notes. Had this on tap at Blind Tiger in NYC. Served in a tulip.
a - Pours a deep mahogany brown color with one finger of dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident. This one looks great.
s - Smells of chocolate, pumkin, roasted malts, spice, mint, burnt malts, light cream, pepper, and cloves. Nice nose, lots of chocolate and the pumpkin definitely comes through.
t - Tastes of spices, dark bitter chocolate, pepper, cloves, yeast, roasted malts, and a touch of pumpkin. More spice here and much less pumpkin. Definite step down from the nose for me.
m - Light to medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Overall pretty easy to drink body.
o - Overall an interesting beer. Looked great and had a great mouthfeel, and the nose was promising, though the taste had too much spice to it for me. Worth checking out, would like to try their other beers.
