Belgian-inspired saison with citrus yeast esters, and subdued earth tone. Effervescent and airy. Beautifully simple and clean, with subtle tartness and dry finish.

i dig this one, as simple as it is, its tasty and its light in both abv and in body, so its one of those ones you drink all day everyday, definitely more of a summer thing. probably not one that is dynamic enough to keep me stoked for more than a few days of heavy drinking, but i do like how light this is. the yeast is really mild for a saison, not overly fruity or spicy or even funky, more like a belgian mild ale, if such a thing exists in that way. carbonation is awesome and the finish is awfully clean for the style. hops are light, but definitely bitter this up a little all the way through it. pale yellow beer, the grain profile is fresh but extremely light, pushing too light, but i love a session craft beer that isnt an ipa right now, so this really fits with what i am into at the moment. i have to keep my eye out for more beer from these guys, this is a solid refresher

Tap pour at Lula's in Logan Square.

A: Pours a mellow gold with a nice white head.

S: Pretty traditional clean saison aroma. White cake, bit of coriander, nectarine esters.

T: Dryish and clean. Bit of vanilla, mild hop bitterness, white sugar. Mild.

M: Light-bodied with crisp carbonation.

O: A decent clean saison that's good for sessioning. Penrose could do something more interesting than this though.

Served in a shaped pint glass at Firkin.

Hey, another Penrose beer. When it rains it pours, I guess. This stuff pours a mostly clear sunrise brass topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises light lemon rind, cracked wheat, mild soap, grass, and a pinch of black pepper. The taste brings in more of the same, the grass, wheat, and soap leading the charge. Maybe it's just me, but that soap character seems to be a hallmark of Penrose's yeast... The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slightly drying finish. Overall, a bit of an underwhelming saison for me, especially with that vague soapiness I also found in Proto Gradus. I'm still optimistic about future Penrose offerings, but things have not gone exceedingly well so far.

Stronger tasting and darker in color than I was expecting.

One of my favorites from Penrose. Straw/lemonade colored body with tiny bubbles for a head. Light scent with a bit of an esteriness but not funky. The lack of overt spices or yestiness really is well done here. The beer is bright and effervescent. So drinkable. Can't wait for warm weather here to crush a growler of this. Light citrus notes and almost champagne-like flavor. A hit with a saison fan.

I had a draft at Links in Wicker Park. Low head, nice straw color. Aroma is spicy and clove but not overpowering at all. I get the soapiness taste factor that others have mentioned, but it is faint to me. Overall it is a decent session saison.

Really like this one which I had at a tasting. True to the brewery's description. Would not drink at home in the evening, but perfect to bring to a picnic, order at a summer lunch. Very balanced, light but complex.
