Tulip at Northdown, quick review from notes.

Bright saturated gold, perfect clarity, compact layer of white foam on the surface. Good retention, some lacing visible.

Aromas of light tropical fruit and earthy bitterness. Dried papaya, cantaloupe, coriander.

Taste is lightly malty with a cantaloupe note up front, followed by a building earthy bitterness that lingers long into the aftertaste. Medium bodied with a balanced malty presence. Overall it's worth a try, though not sure i'll seek it out based on personal preference.

12/14: bottles just came out, picked up a single. Not really as tropical as before, more earthy Belgian yeast, and grapefruit peel bitterness, sort of clovey.

On tap, poured into a pint glass. The aroma is a mellow, soapy lemon with a subtle grassy and floral character developing late before settling on a bread note. The beer is a pale straw color and hazy with a dense white froth that has alright lace and retain. The taste is medium sweet and slightly less than medium bitter. The texture is creamy with a soft fizz carbonation. The medium light body consists of lemon and toast flavors with a bitter herb to it. The zippy finish has a spice to it; it's short and quick and crisp with a refreshing, clean grass and light lemon aftertaste that doesn't stick around long.

I had this beer from a bottle and, like most IPA's, I was expecting a little more carbonation. The beer seemed flat yet still delicious. I love a good Belgian Ale and a good IPA, but this didn't win me over on the Belgian IPA family. Maybe another go of it will sway my decision.

Really light straw colored body that is transparent. A little cloudiness that you'd expect but a very bright body almost like lemon or pear colored. The scent has some background spice but the hops come through. A bit of the wheat and some wet grassy hops on the nose. The taste is a bit muddled. There are some Belgian characteristics with slight spice enhanced by the coriander added. I get the hops primarily on the finish, which is much more bitter than I expected. I get spicy witbier on the front and dank IPA on the finish. Plenty of flavor in this one. Solid beer that I think can be more refined.

12oz, bottled on 12/05/14
A - huge, white head stands head and shoulders above the top of the glass, holding excellent retention atop a very pale, hazed straw colored ale
S - citric nose with Wit yeast; orange rind, peppery coriander, fresh grapefruit
T - very flavorful with orange and grapefruit zest, pepper, coriander, yeast, cracked wheat; bitter and spicy
M - medium body, higher carbonation makes it feel full and allows the vast flavors to travel the palate
O - really solid White IPA. This is a rare style I've grown to love & this is a good one. Everything I've had from Penrose has been excellent!
