look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, medium-high carbonation, gold in color, clear

Smell: hay and peaches

Taste: Peaches and hay dominate with slight pear and pepper

Mouthfeel: sweet and funky, medium-light in body, medium-high carbonation

Overall: I find this similar in overall taste to their gose. It is an above average saison that hits everything that I expect from the style. There is enough here to keep me curious about the brewery.

On tap at the brewery.

A: Light amber color, slightly cloudy, good sized, sticky off-white head.

S: Clove, Juicy Fruit, pepper and coriander right up front; a little sweet malt and yeast character in the background.

T: Like the smell except that malt comes to the fore mid-sip. Finishes with southern Belgian yeast character, very slightly tart.

M: A little full for a saison. This seems to come from the spice notes/additions. I'd like tarter and drier.

O: Good beer, but a little tilted toward spice for me.

Served in a pint glass at the brewery.

Appearance - Huge white head. Excellent surface foam and lacing. Hazy orange body.

Smell - Spicy and estery. Cloves. Some sweetness in the nose from doughy malt. A hint of funk.

Taste - Sharper taste of some citrus here. Grain more prevalent, but a bit of lingering sweetness. Still fruity esters. Slightly bitter in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body, pushing heavy for a saison, especially of this size. Well carbonated.

Overall - Second beer by this brewery and I'm impressed. This is good stuff.

@ Atwoods, Somerville

Clear gold with a thin white head that did it's best to outlast the humidity. Pepper, biscuit and floral aroma. Flavor has a nice balance of sweet light malt chamomile and spicy dry finish. Could be sessionable with a lower abv.

I like it. Lost Nation seems to be making the rounds around metro Boston and this was good enough to try some others.

Lamoille is a county in the upper middle of Vermont if you're interested.

From notes (On-tap at Meadhall)

Appearance: It has a nice hazy golden/orange color to it. It has a nice white head that dies down moderately and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of cloves, peppery spices, bready Belgian yeast, orange/lemon zest and some coriander.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some cloves, pepper, bready yeast, coriander and some orange/lemon zest.

Mouthfeel: It has a med/high carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavors and aromas.
Great Saison!

First had: on tap at the brewery

Poured a hazy golden-yellow with a good inch or two of white head that receded to a thin layer and left a bit of lacing on the glass. Aroma of biscuity malts, herbal, spicy, funky, notes of overripe fruit. More of the same in the taste, "sweet & funky" being the take-home message from my notes. Good barnyard funk, bready yeast, fruity sweetness, dash of clove and green peppercorns. Light-medium body, a bit unbalanced, but made for a solid saison overall.

Poured on-tap and served in a nonic, the beer is a hazy, honey-yellow coloring with a bright, white head and decent cling. Nose of bubblegum, all-spice, coriander, and herbal highlights. Lots of Belgian character on the nose. Flavors of fruity sweet forward, with berry, apple, and apricot, followed-by a farmhouse spice blend. Light and crisp bodied, with a roasty, fruit sweet aftertaste. Short lingering fruit and spice finish. Very good beer.

10/11/14 - Updated from a 'Had' rating of 3.75

Hazy yellowish orange color with a white head, fine retention and some lace. Flavors include baked banana bread, clove, pilsnery yeast, straw, light spice, herbal hops, some vanilla sweetness. Mouthfeel is pretty nice, on the bigger-feeling side but with great carbonation.

Very tasty, but saison? I've had this 5 or 6 times now and it's always felt like a hefeweizen to me.

Holy COW!

This is easily one of the great stateside saisons made.... I had this fresh, at Mule Bar in Winooski.

The classic funk comes through very subtly in a manner that slowly makes you realize it's there.

The spiced fruit also comes through. An amazing beer from one of the states hottest new breweries...

I cannot wait to see what sort of limited release stuff they have in store for us.

Another solid offering from Lost Nation, on-tap at the Three Penny Taproom. Very nice earthy lemmon-pepper nose, with a stronger lemon flavor on the taste. Very good yeast character backed with a peppery finish. Nice and rustic, well done and an excellent example of the style.

Service: On tap

A:
Pours a clear golden straw with a brief finger of white froth. OK retention; a little lacing. (3.5)

S:
Yeasty dough. Rising dough, banana, white pepper. (3.5)

T:
Chalky floral yeast. Tons of layers of sticky, warm, banana-ey yeast, hard water, white pepper, dry mild hoppy backbone. (3.5)

M:
Crisp and thick-feeling with aa kind of coating yeast character, pretty quick finish. (3.25)

O:
Not a terribly good Saison in my opinion.
It is not a bad beer, and was not infected or anything, but the yeast character was a little over the top for me. I really like yeast in beers too, but it kind of became sticky and shudder-inducing after a bit. I don't know about its being a saison either, but that might just be me...
All-in-all it was just a little too much for me.
Would not have again; you can there are definitely better saisons out there. (3)
