Just cause it's dark and German doesn't mean it's an alt. Based on the obscure Kottbusser style of beer, this surprisingly dry beer retains all the aroma and nuance of honey (from bees) and molasses (not from bees) creating a perception of sweetness through cool, controlled fermentation. Because we're sweet enough damn it.

16 oz can into a stange.
A: Cloudy dark amber color with a foamy light tan head.
S: Freshly baked bread, honey, sarsaparilla.
T: Unexpectedly dry and bitter; medicinal.
F: Medium-light bodied and fairly well-carbonated.
O: Not bad but a little disappointing by Off Color standards.

Pours clear brown with ruby tints. Short-lived wispy tan head. No lacing, faint leggings when swirled. Aroma is nearly non-existent. Faint smoky toasted dark bread. Flavor is dark bread and apples. Feel is light bodied, lightly carbonated. Overall, drinkable, but not a beer I'd look for.

Poured from a pint can into a Guinness pint glass
L: Pours a darker brownish-red, mostly translucent with maybe a touch of haze. Very small desaturated-brown head that dissipates within seconds.
S - Not a ton of aroma, but what is there is reminiscent of a sweet bread of some sort. A bit of a tang but strong undertones of baked good and something almost like a cola.
T - Rather dry, there's a slight tang up front with a clean body and some sweeter and ever-so-slightly bitter notes on the back end. A bit of complexity throughout the middle to back end of the taste with notes of dark bread. The dryness is the most prominent point.
F - Medium-thin body and light-medium carbonation. Dries the mouth ever so slightly.
O - A somewhat surprisingly dry beer with a few interesting notes, but overall not a ton to write about. The added molasses and flaked oats add a bit of interesting complexity that some with more tasting experience than I could have fun with.

Appearance: Pours a clear, medium bronzed, lightly golden color with a moderate off white head. SRM of 20-21.
Aroma: Strong aromas of dark honey, smoked and toasted bread, some leather and caramel malts. Earthy and smokey off the end. (4.00)
Flavor: Strong flavors upfront of smoked honey and floral notes. Some hints of citrus. Then toasted bread, caramel with a leathery note. Finishes with a lingering floral, leathery and smokey flavor. (4.00)
Feel: Medium-bodied, average carbonation. Relatively clean. (3.75)
Compared to Fair State Dad Hat 2/2023: Pours lighter, milder head. Stronger aromas. More smoke and leather. Less molasses and rich amber malt. Lighter, cleaner.
Overall: An interesting Altbier here. Definitely has a smoked and dark honey flavor with some floral and citrus notes. Then classic toasted breadlines with some leathery notes. Classic twist from Off Color and a nice addition to an Altbier, or rather a honey beer as it doesn't have a whole lot of Altbier flavors. It's a Dark Honey Lager as described on the can. (Rating: 4.01)

Unknown vintage; drank 3/2/15 @ the Yarchives.
Murky brown/red appearance.
Big khaki head; decent lace.
Peanut butter, fresh earth & honey in the nose.
Medium thin mouthfeel.
Honey, peanut butter & graham cracker flavors up front; eucalyptus notes on the finish.
A bit watery despite all those flavors; it's enjoyable but won't stick in your memory too long.

L: Dark brown, almost opaque, with a touch of light translucent brown at the bottom of the glass. Off white head with good retention and some spotty lacing.
S: Honey, caramel, chewy cereal grains, maple syrup. Smells like Honey Nut Cheerios.
T: Milk chocolate, toasted brown bread, caramel, toffee, honey, molasses, cracked cereal grains, and hay.
F: Really thin and light for the rich aroma and complex taste. Quite watery.
O: A solid beer with a lot of interesting flavors. I just wish it had more oomph.

Pours a nice dark tea color. No head or lacing. Smells of sweet malt and honey/molasses. I like how the sweetness ends with a heavy dryness. Minimum hop presence. Kind of thin mouthfeel for all that's going on here.

12oz bottle into 12oz tulip. Poured a very dark brown, with a thin cap of tan head that had no retention or lacing.
First scent is roasty malts. Some sweetness behind that.
Not as much roast on the tongue, more sweetness, and a hint of spiciness.
Body was on the thin side, with a semi-sweet finish.
Drinkability was good, probably wouldn't have two in a row though.
Overall, an nice little brew. Worth a shot if you see it.

Pours a coke like brown with no head, lots of bubbles. Bready, sweet caramel hops, slight hop profile but subdued, oatmeal, reminiscent to a bock smell. This beer is quite sweet with honey, sweet and roasted malts. Highly carbonated and very sweet. Overall this beer is not bad but a little too sweet for my liking.
