Just cause it's dark and German doesn't mean it's an alt. Based on the obscure Kottbusser style of beer, this surprisingly dry beer retains all the aroma and nuance of honey (from bees) and molasses (not from bees) creating a perception of sweetness through cool, controlled fermentation. Because we're sweet enough damn it.

Good dark color. I enjoyed the mouth feel initially although it finished with a very dry after taste. Taste was initially okay, expected more sweet from the molasses and honey. The after taste is what got this beer poor ratings: the poor taste at the end and the dry mouth feel.

Taste is of caramel, roasted malts, light smoke, honey, and a lot of molasses. makes for an interesting and complex sessionable beer. Glad I picked it up to try. Not sure if I would rush out to get this again, but it is tasty.

Pours quite dark for an alt. Cola-brown with amber highlights. Thin whispy head.

Molasses and roasted malt with a strong clove presence in the aroma. Brown sugar and coffee. Spicy hop character, but low. The clove note seems like an off flavor.

Nice robust roasted malts with some fruity esters in the flavor. Little hop character. Nutty and chocolatey. Molasses is strong, but not out of balance. The clove is not as apparent in the flavor, which is nice.

Nice slickness from the oats. Medium bodied with low carbonation. Some astringency.

Doesn't quite fit the style for altbier, but I do imagine they're not all that interested in that.

Pours a murky cola color with a negligible topping of coarse bubbles, even with a vigorous pour. Aroma smells of toffee and salted caramel with a hint of chocolate.

The taste features a coarse, vague sweetness up front, followed by a long, pronounced aftertaste of raw oats. The honey and molasses touted on the label don’t come through in proper fashion. The body stands its ground initially but then falls through toward the middle and back, while the carbonation is on the low side.

I’m sorry to say this falls far short of the enticing description on the bottle. While the acuteness of the oats is intriguing, this brew comes off as thin and sugary without much balance to speak of. This is my first experience with Off Color, and I wouldn’t exactly describe it as putting their best foot forward.

Eyes
Dark chestnut-colored body. A rather thin tan head collapsed and left a creamy cap with minimal lacing throughout.

Nose
Sweet and toasty malts.

Mouth
Toasted grains hit the tongue first. Notes of oats and nuts carried much of the malt flavor. A light, yet noteworthy sweetness was present, consisting of honey and molasses. Not a whole lot going on with the hops, however this brew did finish out with a decent amount of earthy bitterness. Medium bodied. Light/moderate carbonation.

Overall
Not half-bad. Personally, I would have liked a little more from the malts but I didn’t let it ruin my night.
