Just cause it's dark and German doesn't mean it's an alt. Based on the obscure Kottbusser style of beer, this surprisingly dry beer retains all the aroma and nuance of honey (from bees) and molasses (not from bees) creating a perception of sweetness through cool, controlled fermentation. Because we're sweet enough damn it.

Pours a clear dark reddish-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, molasses, and nut aromas. Taste is much the same with molasses, oat, and nut flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a very nice set of aromas and tasty flavors that get better as the beer warms up.

Pours a transparent brown with a fizzy head that disappears right away. No lacing.

Lightly sweet, nutty, cocoa and malty.

The taste is fantastic and unique for this style. German malts, bread crust, honey sweetness, cocoa, light earthy hops with a finish of chocolate and brown sugar lightly coating the tongue.

Lighter bodied, but very smooth. Low carbonation with a lightly slick coating on the palate.

I find this beer to be unique in that it's lighter in feel and abv, but the flavor is terrific and moderately complex. The molasses adds a brown sugar sweetness to go with the honey and it just compliments the cocoa notes fantastically. I could probably drink a whole sixer of this. Wonderful little brew.

Designed for ultimate refreshment but without compromising on quality or flavor, the classic taste of Dusseldorf will take on a hoppier Amber-type taste while the northern German varieties can resemble more of a Brown. Off Color's Scurry resembles more of the later but in true "off-color" fashion, there's a few Americanized twists and turns.

Scurry pours with a medium brown color with reddish amber highlights that pierces its striking clarity. As a creamy ivory-white head builds on top, the frothy later shows strong staying power and laces the glass with broken rings with each drink.

Its medium toasted aromas take on proportions of bread crust, light coffee ground, mild cocoa, pecan and peppercorn. A firm sweet tone of molasses provides the undertow for the toasted and savory grain scent and ride along side of a lightly woodish hop note.

Its husky-sweet taste starts with the promise of molasses and chocolate. But those sweeter flavors turn dry in an instant and allow the rustic nature of toasted grain, nutty and savory character to carry its balance through the middle. Finishing with that extended toasted taste, its spicy hop bitterness links up and dries the taste with its woodsy and slight grassiness.

Medium-light in body, its early sweetness and creaminess suggests a beer of more weight. But once the sweetness lifts, the ale dries out beautifully, but exposes a long draw in the middle that weakens considerably before its crisp and clean finish. Slim minty warmth and a mild iron taste rounds out the taste as lingering grain and toast persist briefly.

Scurry is a somewhat more hefty ale than what the Germans would have made, but its kiss of molasses and chocolate tilt suggests an American microbrewer hand was involved.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada Curved Pint Glass

A: A nice solid dark brown

S: Smells like oats, molasses, and honey.

T: The flavors here are all muted and soft. The oats and molasses mostly dominate.

M: Smooth with just the tiniest of carbonation.

O: This is going to make some great pancakes.

The color is a light reddish to dark brownish amber depending on the light. The head was an ivory froth with real staying power.

The aroma is toasty, kind of nutty like a caramelized pecan. Some sweet caramel malt and a touch of dried fruit.

The flavor is for the most part spot on the aroma as I get a toast, roast and pecan nuttiness. The finish is a bit watery but it holds on to the toast malt throughout.

The feel is full but ends light and watery. This is very easy though and drinks quickly.

Interesting brew as it holds about 80 percent a solid roasted toasted ale and 20 percent a light watery mix.

Poured into a He'brew small shaker pint. Pours a medium to dark mahogany amber with a thin light tan head with decent retention and light lacing. Aroma of bready malt, molasses, hints of nuts and chocolate, dark dried fruit. Flavor follows with dark sweet malt, molasses, nuts, dark dried fruit, dark bread. Medium bodied. A nice example of a old ale / altbier style brown ale with a pleasant sweet, dark malt bill and lots of supporting flavors. Well balanced and interesting.
